Welder, Lake Charles Refinery

The Welder, Lake Charles Refinery works in the maintenance department of the refinery. The positions are straight day jobs, subject to occasional shift work, turnarounds, call outs and mandatory overtime. Welders are responsible for the fabrication, installation, and repair of piping and equipment. This work takes place in all areas of the refinery, outside exposed to the weather elements and to blowing air, heat, noise and vibration. The refinery processes involve hazardous and volatile materials under high temperatures and pressures. The work may take place at heights on vessels and towers and/or in confined spaces.

Responsibilities May Include:

  • Fabricate and repair piping, pressure vessels and structural steel using SMAW (stick), GTAW (tig) and GMAW (mig) processes and cutting torches, arc gougers and plasma arc cutters
  • Interpret isometric drawings
  • Prepare equipment for welding
  • Lay out, bending, punching and fabrication and erection of structural work, such as beams, platforms, ladders, etc.
  • Perform production welding using welding machines
  • Assuring compliance with all Company policies and procedures and training requirements

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Legally authorized to work in the United States without restrictions
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Valid driver's license
  • 3 or more years of experience as a journeyman level Welder in an oil refinery, chemical process, electric utility, electrical distribution equipment testing or similar facility
  • Willing and able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC). Information can be found at https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/twic
  • Willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to:
    • Lift up to 50 pounds
    • Climb up to 285 feet in height
    • Work near large, hot, high-speed machines
    • Work in enclosed spaces, such as tanks and silos
    • Work overtime
    • Work with petroleum products that are under high pressure and heat
    • Work outside in harsh weather conditions
    • Maintain your face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)
    • Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (including but not limited to items such as steel-toe shoes, ear and eye protection, fall protection)
    • Work around chemicals, including acids and bases, that may be under high pressure

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Completion of an apprenticeship, certification or associate degree program in welding
  • Good oral and written communication skills pertaining to documenting inspection and repair information 
  • Ability to read at a level to understand written safety procedures, work procedures, work permits and instruction manuals
  • Proficiency in computer usage basics including e-mail, Windows navigation, SAP

 

The Lake Charles Refinery is located in Westlake, Louisiana. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrocracking, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. Facilities also include a specialty coker and calciner. The refinery processes a mixture of light to heavy, low- and high sulfur and low- and high-acid crude oils. It receives domestic, Canadian and other foreign crude oil through truck, pipeline, marine transportation and terminals, including the Beaumont and Clifton Ridge terminals and the Bayou Bridge Pipeline. Lake Charles produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include off-road diesel, home heating oil, feedstock for our Excel Paralubes joint venture, specialty graphite petroleum coke and petroleum coke. Refined products are distributed in the southeastern and eastern United States by truck, rail car, barge or pipelines and exported to Latin America and West Africa.
