The Senior Manager of Technical Support has two main roles. One is to support the daily operation of the plant by providing technical expertise to address operating problems and optimize the process. In this role, the Director of Technical Support will be a mentoring technical resource for the engineering team, and will provide technical oversite in PHAs, incident investigations, turnarounds, etc. The second role is to develop and execute the capital project plan. The position is responsible for process engineering designs, supporting project development and following projects through all stages, from conceptual design through detailed engineering, construction, commissioning & start-up. This position also provides oversite on the development of capital projects to be included in the Long-Range Plan.
Responsibilities May Include:
- Lead and mentor a team of process, control, and project engineers. Assess employee performance, provide feedback for development.
- Lead an engineering team in monitoring, troubleshooting, and generating ideas for daily process unit optimization.
- Provide guidance for the development and improvement of advanced controls.
- Provide technical guidance to operations which includes oversite of daily instructions, procedural updates, and updates to process safety information.
- Responsible for unit process safety management including management of change, process hazard analyses, and timely completion of associated action items.
- Engaging internal and external subject matter experts to ensure technically sound recommendations/designs while adhering to Required Engineering Practices.
- Responsible for maintaining a catalyst, chemical, and utility budget. This includes developing annual catalyst, chemical, and utility budgets.
- Responsible for developing engineering scope for turnarounds and catalyst changes. This includes modifications to equipment, catalyst replacement selection, and process improvements.
- Responsible for maintaining the capital projects budget. This includes design, construction, and startup of small projects. Developing a 5-year capital long range plan. Integration with major capital projects team supporting Excel Paralubes projects.
Required Qualifications:
- Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
- Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering
- 8 or more years of plant engineering experience including support of operations, unit optimization, and projects
- Supervisory experience

- Must be willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to comply with the following:
- Travel up to 5% of the time
- Occasional on-call duties
- Work extended hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays
- Transport articles up to 50 pounds
- Work safely near large, hot, high-speed machines
- Climb ladders and stairs up to 200 feet in height
- Work around chemicals, including acids and bases
- Work around hydrocarbons under high pressure and heat
- Work outside in harsh weather conditions
- Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, ear and eye protection)
- Maintain face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Ability to interact and work in a team environment
- Ability to balance short-term and long-term priorities
- Experience with project development and execution including an understanding of project economics and justification
- Experience with an ISO 9001 compliant Quality Management System
- Proficient with process simulation programs like HYSYS
- Proficient in various computer applications such as Microsoft Office Applications
- Possess functional/regional expertise to contribute to success of the business
The Lake Charles Refinery is located in Westlake, Louisiana. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrocracking, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. Facilities also include a specialty coker and calciner. The refinery processes a mixture of light to heavy, low- and high sulfur and low- and high-acid crude oils. It receives domestic, Canadian and other foreign crude oil through truck, pipeline, marine transportation and terminals, including the Beaumont and Clifton Ridge terminals and the Bayou Bridge Pipeline. Lake Charles produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include off-road diesel, home heating oil, feedstock for our Excel Paralubes joint venture, specialty graphite petroleum coke and petroleum coke. Refined products are distributed in the southeastern and eastern United States by truck, rail car, barge or pipelines and exported to Latin America and West Africa.
