Senior Process Engineer, Lake Charles Refinery

The Senior Process Engineer employs technical information and skills to ensure that assigned units or areas are appropriately optimized, are run safely and in an environmentally responsible manner.

 

Responsibilities May Include:

  • Monitor and evaluate unit performance through effective unit monitoring tools and reporting of key performance indicators for assigned units 
  • Know and understand unit rate and performance constraints on a daily basis, and provide ideas to remove constraints and optimize unit performance
  • Provide operating guidance and troubleshoot operating/quality problems and provide effective solutions
  • Monitor unit environmental limits and take appropriate action to achieve environmental requirements and objectives
  • Evaluate, select and coordinate unit catalyst selection and replacement and other chemical usage requirements
  • Monitor and evaluate catalyst and chemical performance/usage in support of cost management and make recommendations for improvements
  • Work with and seek out other disciplines to improve unit reliability
  • Generate process designs for improvement projects and participate as required in major project activities
  • Provide technical support for turnaround planning and execution
  • Ensure that all Process Safety Management requirements, particularly PHA and MOC, are properly met and required actions completed and maintain Process Technology Packages
  • Lead and participate in investigations and complete assigned action items

Required Qualifications:

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher degree in Chemical Engineering or equivalent
  • 5 or more years of experience working in a refinery or similar plant environment 
  • Willing and able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC); Information can be found at https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/twic  
  • Must be willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to comply with the following:
    • Travel up to 5% of the time
    • Occasional on-call duties
    • Work extended hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays
    • Work safely near large, hot, high-speed machines
    • Climb ladders and stairs up to 200 feet in height
    • Work around chemicals, including acids and bases
    • Work around hydrocarbons under high pressure and heat
    • Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, ear and eye protection)
    • Maintain face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 8 or more years of experience working in a refinery or similar plant environment
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting ability of refinery processes 
  • Demonstrated written & oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team

 

The Lake Charles Refinery is located in Westlake, Louisiana. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrocracking, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. Facilities also include a specialty coker and calciner. The refinery processes a mixture of light to heavy, low- and high sulfur and low- and high-acid crude oils. It receives domestic, Canadian and other foreign crude oil through truck, pipeline, marine transportation and terminals, including the Beaumont and Clifton Ridge terminals and the Bayou Bridge Pipeline. Lake Charles produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include off-road diesel, home heating oil, feedstock for our Excel Paralubes joint venture, specialty graphite petroleum coke and petroleum coke. Refined products are distributed in the southeastern and eastern United States by truck, rail car, barge or pipelines and exported to Latin America and West Africa.
