The primary responsibilities of the Quality Lab Tech, Specialties is to perform analysis for assurance of final product, intermediate stream, or wastewater in compliance with company or regulatory agency specifications.

Responsibilities May Include:

  • Performing and documenting quality assurance testing to ensure the accuracy and integrity of analytical results in adherence to the Laboratory Quality Assurance program
  • Performing all analyses in accordance with Regulatory, and Refinery protocols and procedures to ensure all quality control procedures were followed and results are valid, complete, and correct.
  • Learning and applying analytical standards and methods, and regulatory requirements in order to ensure compliance and completing tasks in a timely manner
  • Solve technical problems encountered during the course of completing assigned tasks
  • Communicating and consulting with engineers, operators, laboratory, maintenance, and management personnel to ensure accurate analyses
  • Demonstrating good interpersonal skills including communication, listening, and teamwork
  • Responsible for the safety and health of yourself and those working with you, promoting health and safety of others, and performing quality work in a safe and environmentally conscientious manner
  • Responsible for complying with Laboratory, Refinery, and Company policies and procedures, established standards, and governmental regulations (Federal, State, & Local)
  • Meeting the minimum standards for physical requirements of the position
  • Available for overtime and “call-outs” to support the Refinery
  • The work schedule is a 12-hour shift (Days Only) rotation pattern

 

The Technician also has several maintenance and housekeeping responsibilities such as disposing of remaining sample bottles, restocking supplies to include solvents, gloves, sample bottles, and filters.

 

Maintenance and Housekeeping Responsibilities May Include:

  • Maintaining lab equipment
  • Maintain a clean and contaminant-free work area
  • Accurate and timely completion of sample testing
  • Technicians are also responsible for entering the data into the computer in a timely manner so that the
  • respective unit can make the proper adjustments if needed
  • Assist chemist(s) with instrument commissioning, calibrations and troubleshooting
  • Assist with development of new testing procedures and methods

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Legally authorized to work in job posting country
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Must have valid driver’s license
  • Associates degree or higher in chemistry or related field 
  • Completed 8 hours or more of college-level science and/or math credits
  • Must possess intermediate math and analytical skills
  • Basic computer proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Currently hold or be able to qualify to receive a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card prior to employment start date. Note: information regarding TWIC qualification standards may be found at https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/twic
  • Willing and able to perform/comply with the following, with or without reasonable accommodation:
    • Must be willing and able to work shift schedule, rotating shift, including but not limited to days, nights, weekends, and holidays
    • Must be willing and able to work overtime
    • Must be willing and able to read technical procedures and materials in English
    • Must be willing and able to work around chemicals, including acids and bases
    • Must be willing and able to work with petroleum products that are under high pressure and heat
    • Must be willing and able to wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, ear and eye protection)
    • Must be willing and able to maintain facial hair daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly
    • Must be willing and able to learn computer software associated with laboratory operations

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2 or more years laboratory experience performing applicable laboratory tests and analyses
  • Working knowledge of EPA practices and protocols 
  • Knowledge of laboratory and refinery/petrochemical safety procedures
  • Knowledge of basic statistics, quality control, and Laboratory Information Systems (LIMS)
  • Organizational ability and skill in interpreting scientific results; high mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and analytical thinking
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities on a daily basis

 

*The starting pay for this position is $45.14 per hour.  Future pay changes will be determined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The Lake Charles Refinery is located in Westlake, Louisiana. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrocracking, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. Facilities also include a specialty coker and calciner. The refinery processes a mixture of light to heavy, low- and high sulfur and low- and high-acid crude oils. It receives domestic, Canadian and other foreign crude oil through truck, pipeline, marine transportation and terminals, including the Beaumont and Clifton Ridge terminals and the Bayou Bridge Pipeline. Lake Charles produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include off-road diesel, home heating oil, feedstock for our Excel Paralubes joint venture, specialty graphite petroleum coke and petroleum coke. Refined products are distributed in the southeastern and eastern United States by truck, rail car, barge or pipelines and exported to Latin America and West Africa.
