The Electrician, Lake Charles Refinery works in the maintenance department of the refinery. The positions are straight day jobs, subject to occasional shift work, turnarounds, call outs and required overtime. Electricians are responsible for the installation, preventive maintenance, repair, modification and troubleshooting of refinery electrical systems, including power distribution equipment and electric motors for pumps, compressors and related equipment. Electricians work with a wide range of voltage, from 13.8 Kv to 120v. This work takes place in all areas of the refinery, outside exposed to the weather elements and to blowing air, heat, noise and vibration. The refinery processes involve hazardous and volatile materials under high temperatures and pressures. The work may take place at heights on vessels and towers and/or in confined spaces.

What You’ll Do

  • Installing, removing, and testing of refinery electric motors
  • Disconnecting and connecting electrical power to refinery equipment
  • Racking in and racking out high voltage equipment
  • Testing and maintaining electrical safety systems
  • Troubleshooting electrical circuits
  • Fabricating and running electrical conduit and wiring as needed
  • LOTO equipment as required
  • Preparing Schematic drawings, sketches and reports to reflect activities
  • Operating electrical test equipment
  • Wearing required electrical Personal Protective Equipment
  • Coordinating work of others as needed
  • Assuring compliance with all company policies and procedures and training requirements

 

What You’ll Bring - Required

  • Legally authorized to work in the United States without restrictions
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Valid driver's license
  • 3 or more years of experience as a journeyman level Electrician in an oil refinery, chemical process, electric utility, electrical distribution equipment testing or similar facility
  • Experience reading and interpreting electrical schematics and one-line drawings
  • Willing and able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC). Information can be found at https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/twic
  • Willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to:
    • Lift a minimum of 50 pounds
    • Climb up to 285 feet in height
    • Work near large, hot, high-speed machines
    • Work in enclosed spaces, such as tanks and silos
    • Work overtime
    • Work with petroleum products that are under high pressure and heat
    • Work outside in harsh weather conditions
    • Maintain your face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)
    • Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, ear and eye protection)
    • Work around chemicals, including acids and bases, that may be under high pressure
    • Read at a level to understand written safety procedures, work procedures, work permits and instruction manuals (English Language)

 

What Makes You Stand Out - Preferred

  • Completion of an industrial electrician apprenticeship, certification (e.g. NCCER), or relevant associate degree program
  • Strong oral and written communication skills pertaining to documenting inspection and repair information
  • Proficiency in computer usage basics including e-mail, Windows navigation, SAP

 

Compensation

The hourly rate for this position is determined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement. The starting 2nd class Craft Worker rate is currently $49.44 per hour. The 1st class Craft Worker rate is currently $52.54 per hour. Benefits include 8% 401k match, Cash Balance Account pension, and 7.5% annual cash bonus target.

 

The Lake Charles Refinery is located in Westlake, Louisiana. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrocracking, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. Facilities also include a specialty coker and calciner. The refinery processes a mixture of light to heavy, low- and high sulfur and low- and high-acid crude oils. It receives domestic, Canadian and other foreign crude oil through truck, pipeline, marine transportation and terminals, including the Beaumont and Clifton Ridge terminals and the Bayou Bridge Pipeline. Lake Charles produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include off-road diesel, home heating oil, feedstock for our Excel Paralubes joint venture, specialty graphite petroleum coke and petroleum coke. Refined products are distributed in the southeastern and eastern United States by truck, rail car, barge or pipelines and exported to Latin America and West Africa.
