Overview: The Co-op will generally occur over the summer beginning in June. The work schedule for the Co-op program is a minimum of 20 hours each week, up to 40 hours per week, 8-hour workdays, Monday – Friday, with no overtime. The duration of the position is approximately 10-12 weeks. The Co-ops will be classified as non-represented temporary employees and will be paid $17/hour. Co-ops will be assigned a mentor and will receive training, experience, and work responsibilities in their craft. Co-ops are expected to actively participate in their respective Craft team and participate in conversations and ask questions to develop personal learning and gain workplace experience.
The Co-op helpers in the following crafts -Instrumentation, Electrician and Welding will work independently and with other personnel to maintain and operate equipment and processes at the Sweeny Refinery. Some of the processes involved use hazardous and volatile materials under high temperature and pressure. Typical working conditions include outside weather and elements, blowing air, heat, noise, vibration and occasionally working from heights and confined spaces. Operators must follow safe work practices including the wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). PHILLIPS 66 CO-OP PROGRAM IS LIMITED TO 12 WEEKS. Anticipated dates are June 9th to August 22nd, 2025.
Participation in or completion of the Co-op does not guarantee future regular full-time employment with Phillips 66. Before the Co-op begins their role in the field, they will receive basic orientation that includes HR and Safety related topics. A training plan with the Co-op requirements will also be covered.
Responsibilities May Include:
- Shadow and support experienced employees while effectively following all safety, health, environmental, maintenance, and operation practices and procedures
- Learn about health, safety and environmental hazards
- Witness the Permit to Work process
- Witness energy isolation (e.g. Lock, Tag & Try)
- Learn how to recognize and report incidents and near-misses
- Attend daily crew meetings
- Learn how to apply craft skills in the refinery
- Witness work being performed by experienced craftsman based off of weekly maintenance work schedule while learning on the job (and practicing when possible)
- Stop unsafe work or practices
- Demonstrate work-related knowledge
- Work well on diverse teams
- Effectively use multiple information sources
- Demonstrate cooperative and active participation in activities
- Show a willingness and enthusiasm to learn
Basic/Required:
- Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Maintain a valid driver's license
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
Must be willing and able, with or without accommodation, to perform/comply with the following:
- Work safely near large, hot, high-speed machines
- Work around chemicals, including acids and bases
- Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toed shoes, ear/eye protection)
- Maintain face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly
- To work outside in harsh weather conditions
- Work near products that are under high presure and heat
- Work in enlcosed spaces such as tanks and silos
Preferred:
- Enrolled in an Electrical Certificate or Welding Certificate Program - ENROLLED IN ONE COURSE IN THE CERTIFICATE PROGRAM DURNING THE CO-OP
- For Instrumentation Only (Catalyst)- Enrolled in an accredited Instrumentation or Electronics Associate Degree Program or equivalent at a post-secondary educational institution with only one academic year remaining to be completed in the program. Applicants must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA each semester.
- Computer proficiency with Excel, Word, and SAP
- Use of good judgment and the ability to make decisions independently
- Able to comprehend and follow instructions
- Skills in effective communication and teamwork
- Able to interpret and evaluate data and detect problems
The Sweeny Refinery is located in Old Ocean, Texas. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrodesulfurization, and aromatics units, as well as access to the on-site vacuum tower and delayed coking unit, which is an asset owned by Phillips 66 Partners. Sweeny processes heavy, high-sulfur crude oil and some light, low sulfur crude oil. Domestic, Canadian and other foreign crude oil is transported by truck, pipeline, marine transportation and terminals. The refinery produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include petrochemical feedstocks, heating oil and petroleum coke. The refinery receives crude oil by pipeline and via tankers, through terminals on the Gulf Coast, including a deepwater terminal at Freeport. Refined products are distributed throughout the Midcontinent region, southeastern and eastern United States by pipeline, barge and rail car. Refined products are also exported to Latin America by waterborne cargo.
