Shift Production Chemist
Are you a detail-oriented chemist with a passion for safety, optimisation, and continuous improvement? Join our dynamic team at the Humber Refinery as a Shift Production Chemist, where you'll play a vital role in supporting 24/7 refinery operations. Working a 12 hour shift pattern, you will be responsible for analysis to support unit optimisation.
What You’ll Be Doing
As a Shift Production Chemist, you will:
- Perform critical analyses to support unit optimisation and ensure timely, accurate results.
- Manage shift workloads, release data, and communicate key findings to the Lead Production Chemist and refinery units.
- Interface with operations teams to enhance plant performance.
- Maintain high standards of housekeeping, reagent management, and lab consumables.
- Provide detailed handovers and ensure seamless shift transitions.
- Be trained across all lab areas, including coke testing and product blending.
- Support out-of-hours sampling and emergency response as a FREC-trained team member.
- Drive continuous improvement and contribute to HSE and quality audit
What We’re Looking For
We’re seeking someone who is:
- Self-motivated, organised, and adaptable to changing priorities.
- Skilled in lab testing and its impact on refinery and blending optimisation.
- Experienced in troubleshooting instruments and lab processes.
- A strong communicator with excellent interpersonal and IT skills.
- Committed to safety and continuous improvement
Qualifications & Training
- Relevant chemistry qualifications and lab experience.
- FREC training (or willingness to obtain)
- Full UK Driving Licence

The Humber Refinery is playing its part of the UK’s decarbonisation efforts.
As a part of the UK Government’s net zero ambition, the Humber Refinery is on a journey to become the Refinery of the Future. With proposed plans for a number of projects including to implement a first-of-a-kind FCC carbon capture project, the Humber Refinery is part of Humber Zero, a world-scale concept to reduce UK industry carbon emissions, saving up to 8 million tonnes of CO2 by 2030 from the Immingham industrial area.
On top of this, the Humber Refinery is the UK’s only refiner producing Sustainable Aviation Fuel at scale. It is also the only European facility producing battery anode coke, which forms a critical component for lithium-ion batteries used in electrical vehicles and in consumer electronics. Our current production of battery anode coke is equivalent to placing 1.3 million EVs on the road every year, and we are developing multiple projects to expand this capability.
