What to Expect
The Sr Process Engineer uses technical expertise to achieve operational and project objectives by working to design, implement, control and optimize new and existing processes that are used in Phillips 66 refineries. By partnering with internal and external stakeholders, the Process Engineer collaborates to build technically sound strategies around business improvement opportunities, safety enhancements and sustainability while reducing cost and maximizing profitability.
What You’ll Do
- Design engineering solutions and the associated validation process to enable the realization of a design brief (for example, in terms of functionality, performance, aesthetics, and cost) that conform to organizational and/or regulatory standards.
- Analyze information and specify the methods and process steps, as well as the plant, machinery, and equipment, required to design and continuously improve manufacturing or materials processes and process systems to deliver the end product within specified cost and quality parameters.
- Manage technical troubleshooting projects and process operations, ensuring effective diagnosis of technical issues with equipment and experiments and the development of effective solutions.
- Conduct research using primary data sources, and select information needed for the analysis of key themes and trends, including yields and reliability metrics.
- Participating in Process Safety Management (PSM) activities such as MOC, PHA's and LOPA to support overall refinery goals around action item closure.
- Maintaining key process safety information including P&IDs, PFDs, Heat and Material Balances.
- Providing process and technical support for major turnarounds, maintenance projects, and unit shutdown / startups on shift schedule.
- Visibly demonstrating commitment to the workplace safety and health of employees and contractors.
What You’ll Bring – Required

- Willing and able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC).
- Must be willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodations, to comply with the following:
- Travel up to 5%
- Work extended hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays, and occasional on-call duties
- Climb ladders and stairs up to 200 feet
- Work safely near large, hot, high-speed machines, around chemicals and hydrocarbons under high pressure and heat, and in harsh weather conditions.
- Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment
- Maintain face daily for proper respirator/face mask seal. (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)
- Bachelor's Degree or higher in an engineering discipline.
- 5 or more years of engineering experience.
- 7 or more months of supervisory OR mentoring experience.
What Makes You Stand Out – Preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering.
- Experience with process simulation software. (e.g. HYSYS, Pro II, AspenPlus, etc.)
- 5+ or more years of experience working as a Process Engineer at a refinery.

Compensation Range
This position has a base salary range of $137,700 - $168,300.

The Wood River Refinery is located in Roxana, Illinois, about 15 miles northeast of St. Louis, Missouri, at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrocracking, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. The refinery processes a mixture of light, low-sulfur; heavy, high sulfur; and high-acid crude oil. The crude supply is sourced domestically or from Canada. Wood River produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include petrochemical feedstocks, asphalt and petroleum coke. Refined products are distributed to customers by pipeline, rail car, barge and truck and are shipped to markets throughout the Midcontinent region.
