As a Specialist III, Design, you will play a key role in ensuring consistent and accurate piping and civil design for projects at the refinery. This role involves solving complex design problems, maintaining strong technical standards, and seeing your work move from concept to creation. You’ll be at the forefront of integrating advanced design technologies and best practices, ensuring every project reflects both industry-leading standards and the unique needs of our organization.

 

What You’ll Do

  • Independently develop and deliver complex piping and civil design solutions that support capital and expense projects across all phases of work
  • Produce, review, and revise detailed design packages, performing field verification and research to ensure accuracy, constructability, and compliance with engineering and safety standards
  • Analyze design issues, evaluate practical alternatives, and apply technical judgment to resolve problems during project execution
  • Contribute to frontend project development by supporting scope definition, feasibility reviews, and preparation of man-hour and cost estimates
  • Collaborate with engineers, project teams, and external service providers to coordinate design activities and support timely project delivery
  • Provide technical input and daytoday guidance to other designers, reviewing work for quality, consistency, and adherence to standards
  • Maintain current knowledge of industry practices, tools, and technologies and apply that understanding to improve design quality and efficiency
  • Take accountability for assigned deliverables, adhering to safety, quality, and accuracy expectations while meeting project commitments

What You’ll Bring – Required

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
  • Willing and able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC)
  • Possess a valid driver's license
  • Must be willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to comply with the following:
    • Travel up to 5%
    • Operate company vehicle on site premises and/or public roads up to 5%
    • Work extended hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays, and perform occasional duties.
    • Transport articles up to 50 pounds
    • Climb ladders and stairs up to 200 feet
    • Work safely near large, hot, high-speed machines, around chemicals and hydrocarbons under high pressure and heat, and in harsh weather conditions
    • Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment.
    • Maintain face daily for proper respirator/face mask seal (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • 3 or more years of experience in design or engineering
  • Advanced or greater proficiency in CAD drafting, 3D modeling, and engineering design software

What Makes You Stand Out – Preferred

  • 5 or more years of experience in piping and civil design within a refinery or industrial setting
  • Certificate in Drafting/Design or higher-level technical training
  • Supervisory experience overseeing design teams and mentoring others
  • Proficiency working with AutoCAD, CADWorx, Navisworks, and 3D scanning technologies
  • Knowledge of industry standards such as B31.1, B31.3, and PIP, as well as Refining Engineering Practices (REPs)
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, environmental responsibility, and continuous learning
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a customer-focused approach to working with diverse teams
  • Excellent communication skills for collaborating with internal and external partners
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and guide others
  • 4 or more months of experience coordinating the work of a team and/or managing project deliverables

 

Compensation Range 

This position has a base salary range of $124,200 – $151,800.

Where a candidate offer falls within the posted range depends on the candidate's experience, skills, and alignment with the role’s requirements. The Wood River Refinery is located in Roxana, Illinois, about 15 miles northeast of St. Louis, Missouri, at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrocracking, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. The refinery processes a mixture of light, low-sulfur; heavy, high sulfur; and high-acid crude oil. The crude supply is sourced domestically or from Canada. Wood River produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include petrochemical feedstocks, asphalt and petroleum coke. Refined products are distributed to customers by pipeline, rail car, barge and truck and are shipped to markets throughout the Midcontinent region.
