The Process Engineering Superintendent is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing the refinery’s process engineering function. This role ensures alignment of engineering priorities with business strategy, supports operations and capital projects, and fosters the development of engineering talent. The Superintendent will drive technical excellence, ensure consistent unit monitoring practices, and escalate threats and opportunities to optimize refinery performance.
Responsibilities May Include:
Leadership & Strategy
- Ensure alignment of process engineering priorities across departments and with the overall business strategy.
- Act as a strategic link between margin/strategy engineering and execution organizations, capital projects, and reliability teams.
- Assist in developing the strategic vision for the refinery and define projects to achieve that vision.
Engineering Oversight
- Ensure adequate staffing and development of process engineers.
- Create and maintain depth in engineering talent through structured career development plans.
- Mentor engineers at all levels, fostering a culture of continuous learning and technical excellence.
- Promote and implement consistent unit monitoring and onboarding tools across the site.
Project Development & Execution
- Support front-end loading (FEL) processes to ensure timely project development.
- Ensure project process designs are technically sound and aligned with business objectives.
- Provide process engineering interface with operations and Prepare to Operate (PTO) teams.
Performance Monitoring & Compliance
- Ensure Key Process Indicators (KPIs) are actively monitored and responded to appropriately.
- Monitor compliance with corporate safe operating principles and environmental regulations.
- Escalate process engineering threats and opportunities to senior leadership.
Collaboration & Communication
- Share and leverage technical expertise across sites and industry forums.
- Establish and validate project priorities, deliverables, and deadlines.
- Manage multiple projects and competing priorities effectively.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or related field (Master’s preferred)
- 10+ years of experience in process engineering within a refinery
- Proven leadership experience in managing engineering teams and complex projects
- Strong understanding of refinery operations, process safety, and project development
- Excellent communication, mentoring, and organizational skills
Preferred Qualification:
- 2+ years of Business Planning experience
- Experience with advanced process control systems and digital monitoring tools
- Familiarity with industry benchmarking and continuous improvement methodologies
- Ability to influence cross-functional teams and drive strategic initiatives
The Wood River Refinery is located in Roxana, Illinois, about 15 miles northeast of St. Louis, Missouri, at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrocracking, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. The refinery processes a mixture of light, low-sulfur; heavy, high sulfur; and high-acid crude oil. The crude supply is sourced domestically or from Canada. Wood River produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include petrochemical feedstocks, asphalt and petroleum coke. Refined products are distributed to customers by pipeline, rail car, barge and truck and are shipped to markets throughout the Midcontinent region.
The base pay range for this role is $155,700 – $210,000 depending on a candidate's relevant work experience and education.
