As a Process Engineering Director, you’ll step into a pivotal leadership role where your expertise will help shape the future of our operations. This position offers the opportunity to guide a talented engineering team, influence strategic decisions, and drive innovation in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. You’ll be at the forefront of refining excellence, collaborating with diverse teams and senior leaders to ensure our processes remain safe, efficient, and ahead of industry standards.

 

What You’ll Do

  • Lead and develop the process engineering discipline, aligning engineering priorities with the refinery’s business strategy and operational goals.
  • Manage and mentor a team of process engineers, fostering continuous learning and technical excellence.
  • Improve manufacturing processes, oversee project delivery, and ensure engineering standards and specifications are met.
  • Take ownership of multiple critical projects, guide technical troubleshooting, and drive integration of work across departments with a focus on safety, quality, and compliance.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support operations, capital projects, and reliability efforts, optimizing performance and responding to key process indicators.
  • Build strong partnerships and communicate effectively to set project priorities, manage competing deadlines, and execute strategic initiatives.
  • Shape the vision for the refinery, making a meaningful impact on both the team and the organization’s future

 

What You’ll Bring – Required

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country.
  • Willing and able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC).
  • Possession of a driver’s license.
  • Must be willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodations, to comply with the following:
    • Travel up to 5%
    • Operate company vehicle on site premises and/or public roads up to 10%
    • Work extended hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays, and perform occasional duties.
    • Climb ladders and stairs up to 200 feet
    • Work safely near large, hot, high-speed machines, around chemicals and hydrocarbons under high pressure and heat, and in harsh weather conditions.
    • Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment.
    • Maintain face daily for proper respirator/face mask seal. (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)
  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in an Engineering discipline.
  • 10 or more years of engineering experience within the energy industry.
  • 6 or more years of leadership experience in managing engineering teams and complex projects

 

What Makes You Stand Out – Preferred

  • Master’s Degree or equivalent level
  • 2 or more years of business planning experience
  • Experience with advanced process control systems and digital monitoring tools
  • Familiarity with benchmarking industry and continuous improvement methodologies
  • Ability to influence cross-functional teams and drive strategic initiatives
  • Strong understanding of refinery operations, process safety, and project development
  • Excellent communication, mentoring, and organizational skills

 

Compensation Range

  • $222,300 - $271,700

 

 

 

The Wood River Refinery is located in Roxana, Illinois, about 15 miles northeast of St. Louis, Missouri, at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrocracking, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. The refinery processes a mixture of light, low-sulfur; heavy, high sulfur; and high-acid crude oil. The crude supply is sourced domestically or from Canada. Wood River produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include petrochemical feedstocks, asphalt and petroleum coke. Refined products are distributed to customers by pipeline, rail car, barge and truck and are shipped to markets throughout the Midcontinent region.

 

The base pay range for this role is $222,300 – $271,700 depending on a candidate's relevant work experience and education.
