Process Engineer, Margin and Strategy

The Margin and Strategy Process Engineer plays a critical role in maximizing refinery profitability by analyzing and optimizing refinery performance, developing margin improvement strategies, and identifying and supporting long-term planning initiatives. This position bridges process engineering with commercial and planning, ensuring alignment between operational capabilities and market opportunities. This role requires comprehensive collaboration across operating, technical and optimization teams and is key to influencing overall margin performance and broader strategic decisions. 

 

Responsibilities May Include:

  • Analyze and optimize refinery performance to maximize profitability
  • Work with refinery, business, and planning teams to identify broader opportunities for progress
  • Develop and implement margin improvement strategies
  • Identify and support long-term planning initiatives
  • Optimize and troubleshoot process operations
  • Understand key economic measures and capture unrealized value
  • Evaluate key performance data, including yields and reliability metrics
  • Improve cost competitiveness and energy usage in processes
  • Communicate and correct process quality problems
  • Develop and drive the implementation of process improvements
  • Provide technical support for major turnarounds and unit shutdown/startups on a shift schedule
  • Provide process support and specifications for maintenance projects

Required Qualifications:

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or a related field
  • Hold and maintain a valid driver’s license
  • 5 or more years of experience in refining, with a strong background in process engineering and/or economics & planning
  • Proficiency in process simulation tools (e.g., Aspen HYSYS, Petro-SIM)
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Must be willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to comply with the following:
    • Travel up to 5% of the time
    • Occasional on-call duties
    • Work extended hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays
    • Work around chemicals, including acids and bases
    • Work around hydrocarbons under high pressure and heat
    • Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, ear and eye protection)
    • Maintain face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Linear Programming, SEEQ, etc.
  • Ability to develop and evaluate business strategies using quantitative and qualitative data
  • Six Sigma, Lean, or other process improvement certifications
  • Excellent communication and presentation abilities
  • Strong analytical and economic evaluation skill

 

 

The Wood River Refinery is located in Roxana, Illinois, about 15 miles northeast of St. Louis, Missouri, at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrocracking, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. The refinery processes a mixture of light, low-sulfur; heavy, high sulfur; and high-acid crude oil. The crude supply is sourced domestically or from Canada. Wood River produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include petrochemical feedstocks, asphalt and petroleum coke. Refined products are distributed to customers by pipeline, rail car, barge and truck and are shipped to markets throughout the Midcontinent region.

 

The base pay range for this role is $124,200 – $160,700 depending on a candidate's relevant work experience and education.
