Environmental Specialist, Wood River Refinery

The Environmental Specialist provides leadership and direction to the Wood River Refinery (WRR) to maintain continuous compliance with environmental regulations.  The Environmental Specialist serves as a single point of contact for operations team to provide line-of-sight to regulatory obligations.
 

Responsibilities May Include:

  • Strongly reinforce safety-first attitude and culture that no one gets hurt
  • Be a visible leader and role model for regulatory compliance and environmental commitment
  • Provide strategic leadership for environmental issues and activities that impact WRR, seeking strategies that provide maximum benefit to P66, promote and support P66 core values, minimize future liability, and differentiate P66 from its competitors
  • Lead efforts to ensure that environmental compliance gaps are identified and addressed in a timely fashion
  • Provide strong line of sight and communicate about how everyday things can have an impact on our environmental performance
  • Be an active participant in the P66 Environmental networks and be willing to lead small subcommittee efforts
  • Create and sustain a supportive partnership relationship between environmental professionals and refinery operating personnel
  • Monitor key leading and trailing environmental performance indicators and initiate appropriate intervention if metrics indicate unacceptable trends
  • Represent WRR in external affairs related to environmental aspects including discussions with regulatory agencies and other external stakeholders
  • Liaise and develop positive relationships with regulatory and community stakeholders
  • Be a subject matter expert (SME) for environmental regulations applicable to facility
  • Validate assigned procedures
  • Assure timely reporting of recurring and non-recurring regulatory compliance reports
  • Assure timely initial and follow up reporting for releases to various agencies
  • Identify differences in systems/approaches, then drive consistent implementation of best practices
  • Ensure WRR provides cost-effective advice and services based on a thorough understanding of laws, regulations, and available technology
  • Track, interpret, and develop implementation strategies for new and emerging regulations
  • Provide a conduit to understand environmental processes/systems available outside of the function and look for opportunities for implementation
     

Required Qualifications:

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Environmental experience in refining, petrochemical, or related industries
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office (Work, Excel, Outlook)
  • Must be willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to comply with the following:
    • Travel up to 5% of the time
    • Occasional on-call duties
    • Work extended hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays
    • Work safely near large, hot, high-speed machines
    • Climb ladders and stairs up to 200 feet in height
    • Work around chemicals, including acids and bases
    • Work around hydrocarbons under high pressure and heat
    • Work outside in harsh weather conditions
    • Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, ear and eye protection)
    • Maintain face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)
       

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Environmental Sciences, or relevant field
  • 1 or more years of working air or waste compliance
  • Knowledge of environmental regulations and their application to refining operations, including development and implementation of programs to comply with new regulations
  • Strong ability to audit and assess performance of existing compliance programs and implement corrective measures when necessary
  • Able to accurately and clearly communicate both technical and practical information while working in a team environment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Willing and able to work productively in a diverse team-based environment
  • Well-developed organization skills

 

The Wood River Refinery is located in Roxana, Illinois, about 15 miles northeast of St. Louis, Missouri, at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrocracking, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. The refinery processes a mixture of light, low-sulfur; heavy, high sulfur; and high-acid crude oil. The crude supply is sourced domestically or from Canada. Wood River produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include petrochemical feedstocks, asphalt and petroleum coke. Refined products are distributed to customers by pipeline, rail car, barge and truck and are shipped to markets throughout the Midcontinent region.

 

The base pay range for this role is $90,900 - $137,600 depending on a candidate's relevant work experience and education.
