The Advanced Process Control (APC) Engineer provides advanced process control support to refinery operations and minor/major projects. The APC Engineer also ensures refinery process unit business objectives are met through implementation and troubleshooting of regulatory and advanced multi-variable control configurations. As a member of the Process Engineering team, the APC Engineer is given the freedom to think and act independently in performing job duties.
Responsibilities May Include:
- Provide APC engineering support to improve refinery process unit operational performance through APC application performance monitoring, tuning, and optimization
- Lead the development, implementation, design, and modeling of new, as well as maintenance of existing APC applications (Honeywell Forge APC) including implementation of new releases and upgrades
- Identify and present new income improvement opportunities through APC applications for the purpose of improving operational stability and profitability
- Develop APC safe work practices, maintenance procedures, testing procedures, specifications and engineering standards where required
- Develop APC application specific documentation as well as any training required for operations or technical personnel
- Conduct regular reviews of applicable APC Key Performance Indicators (KPI), communicate the results to operations and process engineering along with any remediations required to maintain or improve APC performance
- Provide APC expertise to small and large capital projects by defining instrumentation and control strategy requirements related to APC
- Provide modeling support for refinery gasoline blending. Develop and maintain models for additional efforts as required
- Support adopting and sharing APC best practices through internal and external networking
- Lead Management of Change (MOC) related to APC applications
- Perform regular audits of APC applications to ensure they adhere to safety and reliability related safeguards (alarms)
- Stay abreast of the latest APC technology through attendance at internal/external technical seminars, conferences, and training
- Partner with the Process Engineering team to provide insight on how APC applications can be used to optimize the process unit and how best to achieve process goals via APC
- Work closely with the refinery Process Control team to aid in troubleshooting process control strategies and tuning
- Engage the refinery Planning team to discuss possible refinery margin improvement opportunities and large-scale multi-unit optimization opportunities
- Mentor and assist development of less experienced APC engineers
Required Qualifications:
- Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering
- Valid driver's license
- 4 or more years of combined experience in process engineering/design, process control, and/or advanced process control in refining, petrochemical, manufacturing, or a related industry
- Must be willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to comply with the following:
- Travel up to 5% of the time
- Occasional on-call duties
- Work extended hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays
- Transport articles up to 50 pounds
- Work safely near large, hot, high-speed machines
- Climb ladders and stairs up to 200 feet in height
- Work around chemicals, including acids and bases
- Work around hydrocarbons under high pressure and heat
- Work outside in harsh weather conditions
- Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, ear and eye protection)
- Maintain face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)
Preferred Qualifications:
- 7 or more years of combined experience in process engineering/design, process control, and/or advanced process control in refining, petrochemical, manufacturing, or a related industry
- Experience with one or more refinery process (e.g. crude/vacuum distillation, reforming, hydrotreating, alkylation, fluid catalytic cracking, hydrocracking, sulfur plant, etc.)
- Experience in process design and modeling, especially dynamic modeling
- Knowledge/experience with process control techniques, including basic and advanced control design
- APC implementation and/or maintenance experience in the refining or petrochemical industry
- APC implementation and/or maintenance experience using Honeywell’s Forge APC or the equivalent
- Experience with the Honeywell Distributed Control System (DCS) Experion platform
- Strong commitment to safe work practices
- Proficient with Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills
- Possess a strong desire to learn, strengthen and build skills, and keep up with APC technology, industry standards and codes
- Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment including collaborating with other departments
The Wood River Refinery is located in Roxana, Illinois, about 15 miles northeast of St. Louis, Missouri, at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrocracking, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. The refinery processes a mixture of light, low-sulfur; heavy, high sulfur; and high-acid crude oil. The crude supply is sourced domestically or from Canada. Wood River produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include petrochemical feedstocks, asphalt and petroleum coke. Refined products are distributed to customers by pipeline, rail car, barge and truck and are shipped to markets throughout the Midcontinent region.
The base pay range for this role is $108,900 - $176,400 depending on a candidate's relevant work experience and education.
