Programmable Logic Controller, Bayway Refinery

The Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) Specialist is primarily accountable for development of strategies and programs to improve/enhance long-term PLC equipment reliability and providing technical support to refinery operations and maintenance personnel for systems utilizing PLC’s and Human Machine Interfaces (HMI’s). To deliver upon the key objectives of this position will require an individual who is competent using various manufacturers PLC programming software and with laptop PC’s used to connect to and program these devices. The position will also require an individual who is able to build and maintain strong relationships with vendors and business partners that provide PLC technologies, services, and support of the industrial control systems in the Bayway Refinery.
 

Responsibilities May Include:

  • Maintain a high level of technical and functional knowledge with PLC logic solvers used for general purpose and safety system (SIS) applications
  • Identify technical and strategic opportunities to optimize PLC hardware, software, resources, vendors, lifecycle, strategies and standardization within the refinery
  • Adherence to the Phillips 66 Cybersecurity standard for Industrial Control System (ICS) equipment related to PLC’s, HMI’s and programming laptops
  • Develop/Modify PLC and HMI programs for refinery control systems
  • Network communication methods between PLC’s and between PLC/DCS systems
  • Assist with scoping, developing and approving PLC projects, which includes: DCS vs PLC direction and obsolescence, specification, hardware and software design, testing, commissioning, start-up and documentation
  • Coordinate inventory tracking and management of PLC asset base within the refinery
  • Develop Training Needs Analysis and Training Curriculum for PLC Roles to improve skill-sets within engineering and maintenance
  • Work with other areas of Phillips 66 to identify opportunities to leverage PLC activities and initiatives 
     

Required Qualifications:

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country 
  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
  • Valid driver’s license 
  • 10 or more years of experience working with industrial control systems 
  • 10 or more years of experience with hardware installation, communications interfaces, design, programming, troubleshooting and maintenance of PLCs
  • Ability to maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)
  • Must be willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to comply with the following:
    • Work extended hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays
    • Transport articles up to 50 pounds
    • Work safely near large, hot, high-speed machines
    • Climb ladders and stairs
    • Work around chemicals, including acids and bases
    • Work around hydrocarbons under high pressure and heat
    • Work outside in harsh weather conditions
    • Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, ear and eye protection)
    • Maintain face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)
       

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's or Technical degree 
  • 5 or more years of experience with Allen-Bradley (Rockwell) PLCs
  • Experience with Honeywell control systems, primarily TPS and Experion
  • Experience with Modicon PLCs
  • Knowledgeable in Ethernet networks, network topologies, communication protocols and information management systems (PC’s, firewalls, switches, routers, servers, operating systems)
  • Process measurement technology expertise (i.e. flow, pressure, temperature and analytical measurement technologies and techniques)
  • Safety Instrumented System (SIS) experience with hardware installation, design, programming, troubleshooting and maintenance (e.g. Triconex, HIMA)
  • Experience with Human Machine Interface (HMI) displays and Wonderware programming.
  • Proficient in SAP, Word, Excel, Power Point and ability to present information in a graphic format
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills – able to accurately and clearly communicate both technical and practical information

 

The Bayway Refinery is located on the New York Harbor in Linden, New Jersey. Bayway's facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, solvent deasphalting, hydrodesulfurization and alkylation units. The complex also includes a polypropylene plant with the capacity to produce up to 775 million pounds per year. The refinery processes mainly light and medium, low-sulfur crude oil. Foreign crude oil is supplied to the refinery by tanker, and domestic crude oil is supplied through a combination of rail and marine transportation. The refinery produces a high percentage of transportation fuels, as well as petrochemical feedstocks, residual fuel oil and home heating oil. Refined products are distributed to East Coast customers by pipeline, barge, rail car and truck.

The base pay range for this role is $134,100 - $176,400 depending on a candidate's relevant work experience and education.
