Analyzer Specialist, Bayway Refinery

The Analyzer Specialist is responsible for the design, implementation and continuous reliability of analyzer systems in the operating units within the refinery (not a laboratory setting). In addition, the analyzer specialist provides consulting services for the development of process design specifications, develops operating and training manuals, and participates in training operating and maintenance personnel. An analyzer specialist works closely with the maintenance and environmental engineering departments and provides technical support as needed to resolve equipment and sample system issues. An analyzer specialist utilizes American Petroleum Institute (API) Standards, International Society of Automation (ISA) Standards, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Process Industry Practices (PIPS), Phillips 66 standards and practices to perform the above functions.
 

Responsibilities may include:

  • Leader in all aspects of safety, auditing hardware, coaching personnel and leading by example
  • Developing strategic plans for implementing/upgrading analyzer systems
  • Work as a team with the analyzer maintenance, Instrumentation, and Control Systems groups to support operating areas and projects
  • Steward the development, implementation and maintenance of analyzer engineering standards
  • Steward the development and execution of the analyzer long range plan
  • Participate on the corporate analyzer best practice information sharing network
  • Develop and implement a QA/QC program for analyzers
  • Functioning as a technical expert on large projects with analyzer scope
  • Developing purchase and construction specifications and equipment acceptance tests
  • Identifying areas where analyzers can improve plant operations and profitability
  • Developing capital and expense budget requirements related to analyzer upgrades
  • Performing audits of analyzer installations including failure analysis inspections
  • Interacting with Engineers and Construction contractors, both on and off-site
     

Required Qualifications:

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license
  • Experience with on-line analyzers in a refinery, petrochemical plant, or similar industry
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Must currently hold or be able to qualify to receive a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card
  • Must be willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to comply with the following:
    • Occasional on-call duties
    • Work extended hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays
    • Transport articles up to 50 pounds
    • Work in an industrial setting that could include climbing equipment ladders to access analyzer equipment
    • Work around chemicals, including acids and bases
    • Work around hydrocarbons under high pressure and heat
    • Work outside in harsh weather conditions
    • Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, ear and eye protection)
    • Maintain face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Environmental, Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical, Systems or Industrial Engineering 
  • Understanding of basic chromatography and physical property analyzers in petroleum refining streams
  • Understand various analyzer technologies and hardware and how they apply to petroleum refining
  • Understand codes and standards and how they apply to process analyzers in a petroleum refinery setting
  • Understand sample conditioning principles and hardware and how to apply them to process analyzer systems
  • Knowledge of analyzer maintenance practices
  • Familiar with Smart Plant Instrumentation (SPI/INtools)
  • Experience with ABB Gas Chromatographs
  • Experience with AIT NIR Analyzers
  • Experience with ESC Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems and Dataloggers
  • Experience with Siemens Process Analyzers
  • Experience with Ametek Flue Gas Analyzers
  • Experience with Yokogawa Tunable Diode Laser Analyzers
  • Understand CFR 40 Part 60 and Part 75 regulations and how they apply to environmental analyzers
  • Strong analytical skills including statistical skills (SQC/SPC principles)
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as work productively in a diverse team-based environment
  • Able to accurately and clearly communicate both technical and practical information
  • Possess a strong desire to learn, strengthen and build skills, and keep up with analyzer technology, appropriate standards, codes, and environmental regulations as they apply to analyzers

 

The Bayway Refinery is located on the New York Harbor in Linden, New Jersey. Bayway's facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, solvent deasphalting, hydrodesulfurization and alkylation units. The complex also includes a polypropylene plant with the capacity to produce up to 775 million pounds per year. The refinery processes mainly light and medium, low-sulfur crude oil. Foreign crude oil is supplied to the refinery by tanker, and domestic crude oil is supplied through a combination of rail and marine transportation. The refinery produces a high percentage of transportation fuels, as well as petrochemical feedstocks, residual fuel oil and home heating oil. Refined products are distributed to East Coast customers by pipeline, barge, rail car and truck.
