The Senior Counsel, Marine and Transportation will report to the Managing Counsel, Commercial & Marketing, and work with colleagues in a large law department in a publicly traded, Fortune 50 international energy company. The successful candidate will act as primary counsel to Phillips 66’s logistics team, which provides transportation services (marine, truck, and rail) to the company’s downstream businesses, including Commercial, Marketing, and Lubricants.
Responsibilities May Include:
- Advising the Commercial marine team on time and voyage charter-party terms, contracts of affreightment, letters of indemnity, and bills of lading.
- Providing time-sensitive legal advice to staff at varying levels of management on marine operations, including pilotage, ship-to-ship transfers, demurrage, vessel vetting, and marine terminal assurance.
- Identifying legal risks and advising local and global staff and management on applicable maritime laws and regulations, including the Jones Act and other cabotage laws, and relevant internal policies and procedures.
- Providing urgent advice on maritime incidents, including casualties at sea, groundings, salvage, and general average.
- Advising on and handling shipping disputes.
Required Qualifications:
- Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
- JD degree from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association
- A member in good standing of any US bar
- 8 or more years of experience in maritime law at a top law firm or as in-house counsel at an energy or shipping company of similar size and scale
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience advising on common terms in charter parties
- General familiarity with US, UK, and EU sanctions programs
- Experience advising on compliance and sanctions clauses in charter parties
- Knowledge of the laws applicable to bills of lading, laytime, and demurrage, and more generally carriage of goods by sea
- Understanding of the laws of international trade, including the Incoterms rules
- Familiarity with shipping law concepts, including salvage, package limitation, cargo liability, marine insurance, environmental regulations (e.g. MARPOL), and general average
- General understanding of the energy industry
- Mature judgment and discretion
- Ability to manage and prioritize assignments that may be broad in scope and complexity, and which involve collaborative work with employees in different departments or with varying levels of seniority
- Self-initiation on complex assignments
- Excellent written and oral communication skills including the ability to effectively communicate with clients, legal colleagues, and external counsel
- Ability to work well under pressure, meet deadlines and function independently with limited supervision
- Ability to learn quickly and apply company policies and procedures
- Strong individual initiative, discipline, and commitment to superior performance and continuous improvement
