What to Expect

As Senior Counsel, Commercial, you will provide expert legal services and guidance on complex commercial trading and origination matters that have a significant impact on operations and strategy. You’ll work closely with senior leaders and internal clients, serving as a trusted advisor and business partner. Your work will involve high-stakes issues where precedents may not exist, requiring creative legal strategies and immediate, experience-based judgment. You’ll help drive business success while ensuring compliance and managing risk in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

 

What You'll Do

  • Act as primary counsel to multiple commodity trading desks.
  • Draft and advise on a wide range of trading, storage, and transportation agreements.
  • Provide counsel on the structuring and negotiation of long-term origination deals.
  • Provide authoritative legal advice on complex or ambiguous matters, interpreting and applying company policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Draft, review, and edit a wide range of legal documents, tailored to diverse audiences.
  • Manage relationships with internal clients, acting as a strategic business partner and deploying resources to support business objectives.
  • Instruct and manage outside counsel and specialists.
  • Recommend and implement changes to policies, processes, and standards to improve operational support and ensure compliance.
  • Monitor, interpret, and apply laws, regulations, and industry best practices, maintaining up-to-date expertise through continuous professional development.
  • Lead or contribute to major and unique legal assignments of significant importance.
  • Develop and deliver clear, compelling communications and presentations to various stakeholders.
  • Build and sustain high levels of professional credibility and mutual trust across the organization.

 

What You'll Bring (Required Qualifications)

  • Legally authorized to work in job posting country.
  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an ABA-accredited law school; member in good standing of any US bar.
  • 6+ years of experience in energy law or as in-house counsel at a large energy company.

 

What Makes You Stand Out (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Expertise advising on contractual terms in the trading of energy commodities.
  • Experience advising on commercial disputes.
  • Knowledge of shipping/maritime law.
  • Familiarity with doing business in Latin America.
  • Strong negotiation, advocacy, and presentation skills, with mature judgment and discretion.
  • Ability to work independently under pressure, meet deadlines, and function with minimal supervision.
  • Experience managing legal assignments with significant business impact.
  • Strategic mindset with a sophisticated grasp of business drivers and the ability to align legal strategies with organizational goals.
  • Advanced skills leveraging technology for efficient legal practice.
  • Strong ability to manage complexity, analyze ambiguous situations, and develop effective solutions.
  • Proven track record of building trust through honesty, integrity, and authenticity.

 

Compensation Range

$204,300 - $249,700 annual base salary range
