The Midcon Distillates Trader plays a key role in developing and executing discretionary distillate trading strategies across the U.S. Midcontinent. This role is responsible for optimizing Phillips 66 refinery production, sourcing competitive supply for Aviation, and capturing value through market insight, disciplined risk management, and strong commercial execution within established trading limits.
What You’ll Do
- Develop and execute discretionary diesel and jet trading strategies in the U.S. Midcontinent markets to support overall clean product optimization.
- Analyze market fundamentals, pricing dynamics, and logistics constraints to establish market views and identify trade opportunities.
- Manage physical and financial positions, including time spreads and basis swaps, to express market views and hedge exposures.
- Partner with Market Analysts to maintain accurate product balances, storage positions, and logistics plans.
- Collaborate closely with Refining, VCO, Marketing, Aviation, and Operations to align short-term optimization with longer-term commercial strategies.
- Negotiate and execute physical and derivative transactions, ensuring accurate deal capture and compliance with policies and controls.
- Monitor risk exposures and proactively take action to mitigate market, operational, and financial risks.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders and external counterparties while providing timely market insights to leadership.
What You’ll Bring – Required
- Bachelor’s Degree
- 5+ years of commercial experience
- 1 or more years of verified energy trading experience
- Intermediate or above proficiency in Microsoft Excel
- Legally authorized to work in the job posting country

- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Finance, or Economics
- 1 or more years of verified clean products trading experience
- Advanced knowledge of U.S. clean products physical markets
- Experience with pipeline and waterborne scheduling
- Understanding of refining optimization and experience working within a refining system
- Strong negotiation, communication, and relationship-building skills
- Demonstrated ability to adapt to rapidly changing market conditions and lead through influence
- High ethical standards, strong personal drive, and commitment to team success
- Working knowledge of physical and financial energy markets and trading instruments
- Strong analytical skills with proficiency in Microsoft Excel
- Ability to manage risk within defined limits and comply with trading and operational controls
Compensation Range
This position has a base salary range of $171,000 – $209,000. This role is eligible to participate in the company’s commercial bonus program, offering the opportunity to earn additional compensation based on business and individual performance, in accordance with program guidelines.

The Commercial organization works to effectively leverage assets and market knowledge to create additional value within the risk parameters of the Company. We do this by maximizing general interest profitability, enhancing return on capital employed by successfully partnering with the Refining, Transportation and Marketing functions to ensure Value Chain Integration. Our truck and rail fleets support our feedstock and distribution operations. Rail movements are provided via a fleet of more than 10,000 owned and leased rail cars. Truck movements are provided through numerous third-party trucking companies, as well as through our 100 percent-owned subsidiary, Sentinel Transportation LLC.
