The Market Analyst, Infrastructure provides commodity market fundamentals, short/medium term supply/demand analysis, and trader support for the Global supply and trading functions. In addition, this position will support ad hoc requests from Commercial Senior Management, Commercial groups, Chief Economist, and Investor Relations.
Responsibilities May Include
- Developing a comprehensive understanding of commodity trading, including key supply/demand regions, logistics assets, storage facilities, and financial instruments used to hedge positions in these markets. An understanding of key trading strategies is crucial for success.
- Understanding key trading positions and supporting the analytical team’s work.
- Development and maintenance of near/medium-term (prompt to 2 years out) supply and demand models. This will involve working closely with trading to understand the market and trends, incorporating downtime, seasonal cycles, and macroeconomic variables while utilizing import/export data to ensure the models are accurate and accepted by trading. Identify market anomalies and communicate to trading on what physical market and forward market changes might occur.
- Use fundamental and technical data to develop forward market view predictive models.
- Working with third party consultants and brokers to understand and evaluate their views on commodity markets and factor those into development of Phillips 66’s market view.
- Communicating external study results and market views to assist traders with successful implementation of trading tactics.
- Understanding and communicating geopolitical and regulatory events/factors which impact price movements.
- Leading information gathering process and development of presentation packages as needed.
- Sharing knowledge freely and improving peer group understanding of own niche markets.
- Leading ad-hoc projects and analysis around market fundamentals (including infrastructure changes) to support trade idea
Required Qualifications:
- Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
- Bachelor’s degree
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
- 1 or more years in the energy industry or commodity trading
Preferred Qualifications:
- 2 or more years commercial/trading or related experience in the energy industry
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, finance, economics or agricultural
- 2 or more years’ experience in the energy industry
- 2 or more years’ experience in a trading environment
- 2 or more years’ experience with market analysis
- Familiarity with environmental regulatory programs
- Knowledge of Commercial trading businesses
- Knowledge of global commodity trading
- Refining/petrochemical knowledge
- High degree of collaborative skills
- Ability to develop, lead and actively participate on cross functional teams
- Strong willingness and ability to support internal customers in business requirements
- High degree of initiative, works proactively to anticipate needs
- Excellent written and oral communication, inter-personal and presentation skills
- High degree of collaborative skills; ability to develop, lead and actively participate on teams
- Ability to manage conflict, influence others and persuade/facilitate resolution
- Proficiency with statistical modeling software, database software, and economic modeling
- Proficient in SQL, Python, and/or R
- Strong analytical, problem solving, and organizational skills
- Strong ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Capable of gaining consensus and trust across multiple functional areas within and external to Commercial to build a common vision and direction
- Ability to adapt to quickly evolving requirements
- Ability to synthesize data into useful information and clearly articulate it
- Proactive in problem identification and resolution providing creative solutions to complex issues

The Commercial organization works to effectively leverage assets and market knowledge to create additional value within the risk parameters of the Company. We do this by maximizing general interest profitability, enhancing return on capital employed by successfully partnering with the Refining, Transportation and Marketing functions to ensure Value Chain Integration. Our truck and rail fleets support our feedstock and distribution operations. Rail movements are provided via a fleet of more than 10,000 owned and leased rail cars. Truck movements are provided through numerous third-party trucking companies, as well as through our 100 percent-owned subsidiary, Sentinel Transportation LLC.
