Linux Systems Engineer

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Linux Systems Engineer to join our dynamic and innovative team here at Phillips 66.  As a Systems Engineer, you will be responsible for design, implementation, and management of our Linux-based systems as well as engineering innovative solutions.

 

Responsibilities May Include:

  • Design, implement, and manage our Linux Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) systems supporting physical and virtual servers (on-prem and in cloud).
  • Build secure, efficient, and resilient Linux systems supporting critical business functions.
  • Drive continuous improvement and improve system reliability by automating manual tasks. 
  • Design and implement automated patch management processes for Linux systems, minimizing manual intervention and ensuring systems remain secure and compliant.
  • Creating both Shell and Python scripting to automate system administration and installation jobs for migration.
  • Serve as RHEL subject matter expert analyzing and resolving complex technical issues. Conduct root cause analysis and implement preventive measures to minimize system downtime and improve overall performance.
  • Collaborate with architects, engineers, and stakeholders in implementing next-gen Linux infrastructure.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, including architecture diagrams, design specifications, and operational procedures. Promote knowledge sharing within the team and contribute to the organization's knowledge base.
  • Stay up to date with the latest Linux, cloud technologies, trends, and best practices, and evaluate their potential applications to enhance our services. 
  • Design, implement, and test disaster recovery strategies and ensure business continuity.
  • Collaborate with Managed Service Providers (MSPs) serving as L3/L4 escalation. Provide technical direction and guidance to the MSP.
  • Participate in 24/7 on-call rotation when required. 

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • 4 or more years of experience working in IT
  • Solid understanding of configuration management and infrastructure-as-code (IaC) (e.g. Ansible, Terraform)
  • Implementing automation tools and frameworks for CI/CD pipelines
  • Hands-on experience with Linux system management and administration (RHEL versions 7, 8, 9)
  • Experience building and supporting both physical and cloud-based systems, with a focus on scalability and reliability
  • Extensive hands-on experience with Nutanix and VMware
  • Solid understanding of AWS cloud technologies

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Relevant Certifications (e.g. RedHat, AWS, Azure)
  • Container experience with Docker or Kubernetes
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical thinking abilities, with a focus on delivering scalable and reliable solutions
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to effectively convey complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Familiar with developing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines
