The Distillates Trader role is responsible for developing and executing trading strategies to optimize refinery production, market positions, and value capture across short-term and intermediate distillate markets. This role partners closely with commercial, operations, and analytics teams to balance supply and demand while managing risk and responding to real-time market conditions.
What You’ll Do
- Develop and execute physical and financial distillate trading strategies using fundamental, technical, seasonal, and historical market analysis to capture value across regions and market structures.
- Optimize refinery production disposition and source cost-effective resupply while identifying arbitrage opportunities between physical and paper markets.
- Negotiate, structure, and execute transactions within approved risk limits, ensuring accurate deal capture and compliance with internal controls and regulatory requirements.
- Partner with market analysts to manage balances, inventory positions, storage, and logistics while supporting forecasting and demand planning activities.
- Collaborate closely with VCO, Marketing, Aviation, and Operations to ensure seamless execution and short-term optimization of commercial activities.
- Monitor market conditions in real time, anticipate issues, and make timely decisions under changing conditions to protect and enhance value.
- Provide market insights, reporting, and recommendations to senior leadership to support commercial decision-making.
- Support the Senior Jet Trader and provide back-up coverage for other U.S. Distillate Traders as needed.
What You’ll Bring – Required
- Bachelor’s degree
- 3+ years of commercial or energy trading experience aligned with short-term and intermediate markets.
- Successful completion of the Phillips 66 Trader Assessment Program or at least 1 year of verified energy trading experience
- Legally authorized to work in the job posting country.
What Makes You Stand Out – Preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Finance, Economics, or a related field.
- Advanced knowledge of U.S. clean products and distillate markets.
- Experience with financial derivatives including futures, swaps, and options.
- Strong analytical, risk assessment, and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, open trading floor environment while collaborating across teams.
- Strong verbal communication skills and the ability to influence and build relationships internally and externally.
- Demonstrated understanding of physical energy markets, pricing structures, and risk management principles.
- Ability to negotiate transactions, analyze complex market data, and make decisions under time-sensitive conditions.
Compensation Range
This position has a base salary range of $121,500 - $148,500.

The Commercial organization works to effectively leverage assets and market knowledge to create additional value within the risk parameters of the Company. We do this by maximizing general interest profitability, enhancing return on capital employed by successfully partnering with the Refining, Transportation and Marketing functions to ensure Value Chain Integration. Our truck and rail fleets support our feedstock and distribution operations. Rail movements are provided via a fleet of more than 10,000 owned and leased rail cars. Truck movements are provided through numerous third-party trucking companies, as well as through our 100 percent-owned subsidiary, Sentinel Transportation LLC.
