The Welder, Ferndale Refinery uses multiple welding techniques to bond metal components and multiple cutting techniques to cut, trim, or scarf metal objects to dimensions, as specified by layouts, work orders, or drawings. The tasks listed below are typical, but do not necessarily limit assignments.

 

This position works a 4/10 work schedule.

Responsibilities May Include:

  • Follow all Ferndale Refinery Safe Practices and Procedures.
  • Communicate all safety concerns and incidents to supervisor immediately.
  • Communicate any information pertinent to assigned work so that revisions can be completed to improve future work and complete assignment.
  • Perform Job Safety Analysis (JSA) as required.
  • Perform necessary housekeeping as part of all jobs.
  • Perform any other tasks as assigned by management to the level of training of the individual.
  • Properly utilize rigging equipment including overhead hoists and lifting devices.
  • Operates all shop equipment as required to complete assignments.
  • Perform general bolt-up and blinding of equipment.
  • Select pipe sizes, types, and related materials, such as supports and hangers, according to specifications.
  • Measure and mark pipes for cutting and threading.
  • Assemble and secure pipes, tubes, fittings, and tubing, according to specifications, by welding, brazing, cementing, and threading.
  • Modify, clean, and maintain pipe systems, units, fittings, machines, and equipment following specifications and using hand and power tools.
  • Cut and thread pipe to specifications, using pipe threaders and benders.  Familiar with tubing installations and repairs.
  • Chips or grinds off excess weld, slag, or spatter, using hand scraper or power chipper, portable grinder, or arc-cutting equipment.
  • Cuts metal with torch or plasma cutter.
  • Inspect and test piping components, using pressure gauge, hydrostatic testing, observation, or other methods.
  • Preheats work piece using hand torch or stress-relieving machine.
  • Repairs broken or cracked parts, fills holes and increases size of metal parts using welding equipment.
  • Reviews layouts, drawings, diagrams, or work orders in preparation for welding or cutting metal components.
  • Welds in flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead position.
  • Bonds metal parts or components together, using brazing, gas, soldering, GMAW, GTAW or SMAW  welding processes.
  • Perform stress-relieving procedures.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Legally authorized to work in the United States without restrictions
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Willing and able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) if selected. Information can be found at https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/twic
  • Willing and able to follow weld traveler (recognizing hold and witness points) from the start of the job to the finish
  • Working knowledge of creating isometric and plan view sketches and interpreting P&IDs
  • Working knowledge of basic shop mathematics and refining material dimensions including pipe sizes and schedules, alloy material awareness and use
  • Willingness to perform/comply with the following, with or without reasonable accommodation:
    • To work at least an 10-hour shift which may include some weekends and holidays
    • To work a reasonable amount of overtime
    • To work in enclosed spaces, such as tanks and silos
    • To work near large, hot, high speed machines
    • To wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as respiratory protective equipment, fully encapsulated suit, and ear and eye protection)
    • To maintain your face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)
    • To carry tool buckets weighing up to 25 pounds
    • To use hand tools and pneumatic tools (impact wrench weighing 6 to 9 pounds)
    • To lift and carry pipe joints weighing approximately up to 60 pounds and a variety of lengths up to 15 feet with a single person lift and carry
    • To bend, squat, or stand for prolonged periods on hard surfaces
    • To climb up to 250 feet or higher
    • To kneel, knee stand, hold awkward postures, and reach
    • To grasp approximately 100 pounds of grip force
    • To use fine motor manipulation and repetitive hand & arm motions
    • To use push and pull forces (approximately 60 pounds of pull force and 60 pounds of push force) and maneuver through tight places
    • To be exposed to extreme heat conditions for brief periods of time due to working environment or required PPE for job task
    • To be exposed to extreme cold conditions for brief periods of time due to working environment

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • TIG and Stick welding certs
  • Ten years or more of industrial maintenance experience
  • Working knowledge of computer applications including e-mail, CBTs, etc.
  • Working knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance
  • Working knowledge of hand signals for lifting

 

The Ferndale Refinery is located on Puget Sound in Ferndale, Washington, approximately 20 miles south of the U.S.-Canada border. Facilities include crude distillation, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation and hydrodesulfurization units. It processes a variety crude oils, including Alaskan North Slope, Canadian and other foreign and U.S. shale crudes, primarily delivered via marine vessel and pipeline. Within the refinery is a rail car crude oil receiving facility with a capacity of 30,000 BPD. This offloading facility, owned by Phillips 66 Partners, makes the receipt of additional crude by rail car possible. The refinery produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include residual fuel oil, which is supplied to the northwest marine bunker fuel market. Most refined products are distributed to customers by pipeline and barge to major markets in the northwestern United States.

Compensation

 

Pay for this position is determined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Currently, the pay rate for a Journeyman is $52.42 per hour with a 7.5% annual bonus target (VCIP). This position is not eligible for relocation assistance. This position is on a 4/10 work schedule.
