Process Operator, Ferndale Refinery

The Process Operator (Assistant Operator), Ferndale Refinery will work independently and with other personnel to maintain and operate equipment and processes in the refinery. Some of the processes involved use hazardous and volatile materials under high temperature and pressure. Typical working conditions include: outside weather and elements, blowing air, heat, noise, vibration and occasionally working from heights and confined spaces. Operators must follow safe work practices including the wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). In addition, Operators perform various duties required to keep their assigned processing unit/area operating safely and at specified production/run rates.

 

The anticipated start date for this position is January 2025.

  • Maintaining proper and safe process operations of the operating equipment
  • Serving on the emergency response fire brigade
  • Completing assigned training
  • Participating in training refreshers
  • Upholding company values, understanding and implementing all relevant company policies and procedures to ensure all work meets the required standards

 
Required Qualifications:

  • Legally authorized to work in the United States without restrictions
  • 18 years of age or older
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Possess or can qualify for a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) - information at https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/twic
  • Willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to comply with the following:
    • Work a rotating shift schedule, including but not limited to days, nights, weekends, and holidays
    • Work overtime
    • Read technical procedures and materials in English
    • Learn computer software associated with process operations
    • Work in enclosed spaces such as tanks and silos

    • Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment including but not limited to items such as protective toe footwear, ear and eye protection, head protection, and hand protection
    • Maintain your face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)
    • Work with petroleum products that are under high pressure and heat
    • Climb up to 200 feet in height
    • Lift up to 50 pounds
    • Perform firefighting duties
    • Work outside in harsh weather conditions

 
Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1+ years of direct experience working as a process operator in a refinery, chemical plant, power plant, nuclear plant, wastewater treatment plant, or other industrial manufacturing facility
  • Completion of an Associate’s Degree or higher in Process Technology from an accredited school by date of hire
  • Record of formal emergency response training within the last 24 months

 

The Ferndale Refinery is located on Puget Sound in Ferndale, Washington, approximately 20 miles south of the U.S.-Canada border. Facilities include crude distillation, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation and hydrodesulfurization units. It processes a variety crude oils, including Alaskan North Slope, Canadian and other foreign and U.S. shale crudes, primarily delivered via marine vessel and pipeline. Within the refinery is a rail car crude oil receiving facility with a capacity of 30,000 BPD. This offloading facility, owned by Phillips 66 Partners, makes the receipt of additional crude by rail car possible. The refinery produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include residual fuel oil, which is supplied to the northwest marine bunker fuel market. Most refined products are distributed to customers by pipeline and barge to major markets in the northwestern United States.

Compensation

 

The starting hourly pay rate for this position is $38.04 per hour, with anticipated increases up to $49.04 per hour within the first year. Pay is determined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Relocation assistance is not available for this position.
