The Market Analyst provides commodity market fundamentals, short/medium-term supply/demand analysis, and trader support for the Global supply and trading functions. In addition, this position will support ad hoc requests from Commercial Senior Management, Commercial groups, Chief Economist, and Investor Relations.
Responsibilities May Include:
- Developing a comprehensive understanding of commodity trading, including key supply/demand regions, logistics assets, storage facilities, and financial instruments used to hedge positions in these markets. An understanding of key trading strategies is crucial for success.
- Performing market analysis to develop and support business objectives, specifically:
- Developing and maintaining supply and demand models. This will involve working closely with trading to understand the market and trends, incorporate downtime, seasonal cycles, and macroeconomic variables, and utilize import/export data to ensure the models are accurate and accepted by trading.
- Identify market anomalies and communicate to trading on what physical market and forward market changes might occur.
- Performing actual and projected tariff analysis and alternate logistical cost comparisons.
- Performing project economic modeling & analysis as required.
- Supporting strategy development work for Supply and Trading groups as required.
- Working with global Supply/Trading Commercial Development and Market Analysis & Strategy staff in Houston to leverage resources/skills, share best practices, and provide a global perspective on analysis.
- Leading ad-hoc projects and analysis around market fundamentals (including infrastructure changes) to support trade ideas.
- Working with 3rd party consultants and brokers to understand and evaluate their views on commodity movements and factor those into the development of the P66 market view.
Required Qualifications:
- Legally authorized to work in job posting country
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent accreditation
- 3 or more years of experience in the energy industry or commodity trading
- Proficient economic analysis, data management, modeling and/or investment appraisal skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
Preferred Qualifications:
- 5 or more years of commercial supply and trading experience
- Technical background (i.e., process engineering) would be beneficial
- Working programming knowledge of Visual Basic, Python, SQL, Tableau, and/or R
- Working knowledge of statistical modeling software, SQL or other database software, and economic model development
- Self-starter with a high degree of personal drive and initiative
- Strong written, oral communication and presentation skills
- Extremely reliable and thorough with proven organizational skills and attention to detail
- Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to work in high pressured environment on a broad range of activities and to prioritize workload to meet challenging deadlines
- Strong willingness and ability to support internal customers in business requirements and ability to network effectively to achieve goals
- Collaborative team player with the ability to work constructively within a close and often demanding teamwork environment
- Capable of gaining consensus and trust across multiple functional areas within, and external to, Commercial to build a common vision and direction
