Process Engineer, Borger Refinery

The  Process Engineer  provides technical expertise and support focused on improving the safety, reliability, and profitability on assigned process units in the refinery. The  Process Engineer regularly works with operations, commercial planning, process control, maintenance, and other technical department employees.

 

Responsibilities May Include:

  • Identify, evaluate, and develop improvement non-capital or minimal capital improvements opportunities including:
    • Capacity growth
    • Constraint removal
    • Product upgrade (fractionation, new catalyst, etc.)
    • Reduce energy use (furnace optimization, heat exchanger performance monitoring, etc.)
    • Increase Unit Uptime
    • Grow the use of advance controls
    • Solomon gap closure
  • Lead scoping & FEL – 0/1 phases of expense / capital projects requiring process design work
  • Have key role in FEL – 2/3 optimizing/refining process design
  • Champion energy improvement plan for process units.  
  • Conduct analysis/studies on operations data and identify probable opportunities
  • Provide input to TA work scope development to meet the assumptions in the TA premise document
  • Meet turnaround milestone due dates
  • Shutdown/start up support as needed (especially if using new procedure)
  • Turnaround coverage as needed
  • Oversee catalyst loading
  • Submit next turnaround work scope post turnaround
  • PHA team members 
  • SPHERA Action Item Management 
  • Incident investigation team members / leaders 
  • Be familiar with applicable required standards and industry standards 
  • Participate as needed in third party audits
  • Understand the environmental impacts of respective units

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country without restrictions
  • Possess a valid Driver’s License
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Chemical Engineering
  • 3 or more years of experience as an engineer in industrial settings
  • Willing and able to perform and comply with the following, with or without reasonable accommodation:
    • Travel up to 5% of the time
    • Work occasional extended hours, which may include evenings, weekends and holidays 
    • Work safely near large, hot, high-speed machines
    • Climb ladders and stairs up to 200 feet in height
    • Confined space entry during turnarounds and equipment outages
    • Work around chemicals, including acids and bases
    • Work around hydrocarbons under high pressure and heat
    • Work outside in harsh weather conditions
    • Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, ear, and eye protection)
    • Maintain your face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (someexamples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5 or more years of experience as a Process Engineer in the oil and gas industry
  • Accepts ownership, is accountable and delivers on commitments
  • Strong technical knowledge and ability to apply practical solutions in the field
  • Strong computer skills and a desire to learn new programs and implement new computer based tools
  • Ability to manage a large workload and changing priorities
  • Strong and effective communication skills (verbal and written) in both individual and group settings
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to work well with others
  • Knowledge of PSM
  • Knowledge of safe work practices in an industrial setting
  • Ability to work on cross discipline teams
  • Promotes inclusion and diversity
  • Strong interpersonal skills to facilitate work with both hourly and salaried employees

 

 

The Borger Refinery is located in Borger, Texas, in the Texas Panhandle, approximately 50 miles north of Amarillo, Texas. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. The refinery processes primarily medium sour crude oil produced locally, and heavy sour crude oil produced in Canada, all of which are delivered by pipeline. Borger produces a high percentage of transportation fuels, as well as petroleum coke, NGLs and solvents. Refined products are distributed to customers via pipelines from the refinery to West Texas, New Mexico, Colorado and the Midcontinent region.
