What to Expect
As an Advanced Process Control Engineer, you will blend technical expertise with hands-on problem solving to shape how our facility leverages advanced control technologies. This position provides advanced process control support for refinery operations and projects and promotes process control strategies from basic regulatory control to multivariable control to multi-unit optimization. This role is part of the site Automation Team which is part of the refinery technical organization. The APC Engineer is an active member of multiple cross-functional teams and acts as an advocate for best practices in the selection, implementation, and development of the process control systems to ensure that safety, regulatory, production, and optimization objectives are achieved.
What You’ll Do
- Design, develop, and support advanced process control solutions to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operations.
- Lead the implementation and continuous improvement of process control systems, collaborating with cross-functional teams to identify opportunities and troubleshoot technical challenges.
- Develop and model new process control applications, support and optimize existing systems, and ensure all equipment and processes meet safety, regulatory, and production standards.
- Contribute to project management, equipment installation, and the creation of technical documentation, always striving for operational excellence and continuous improvement.
- Monitor and analyze data to enhance performance and recommend technical advancements.
- Share best practices across teams and support day-to-day process control needs, including tuning, troubleshooting, and developing new control schemes.
- Provide site support, as needed, for APC and regulatory controls, participate in plant improvement initiatives, and contribute to alarm management and control performance monitoring.
- Stay current with industry trends, adopt emerging technologies, and help foster a culture of safety, collaboration, and innovation.
What You’ll Bring – Required
- Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
- Willing and able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC)
- Possess a valid driver's license
- Must be willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodations, to comply with the following:
- Travel up to 5%
- Operate company vehicle on site premises and/or public roads
- Work extended hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays, and perform occasional duties.
- Transport articles up to 50 pounds
- Climb ladders and stairs up to 200 feet
- Work safely near large, hot, high-speed machines, around chemicals and hydrocarbons under high pressure and heat, and in harsh weather conditions
- Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment
- Maintain face daily for proper respirator/face mask seal (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering
- 3 or more years of engineering experience in process automation and multivariable process control in the Energy industry
- 1 or more years of working experience implementing, maintain, and developing DMCplus, MaxAPC, RMPCT, or other advanced model-based controls
- Proficiency in Microsoft Suites, specifically Word, Excel, and Access
What Makes You Stand Out – Preferred
- Masters or PhD in Chemical or Electrical Engineering with a focus in advanced control
- 5 or more years of experience with Process Control Systems in a refinery and/or chemical industry supporting Honeywell TDC2000, TDC3000 or Experion DCS
- 5 or more years of implementing, maintaining, and developing DMCplus, MaxAPC, RMPCT or other advanced model-based control applications
- Must be able to accurately and clearly communicate both technical and practical information while working in a team environment
- Direct experience with unit testing, modeling, and commissioning of advanced controls
- Experience with OPC configuration and virtual machine development/ configuration
- Advanced skills with Honeywell Distributed Control System (DCS) programming, troubleshooting and maintaining controllers, primarily for TDC3000 and Experion platforms
- Possess a strong desire to learn, strengthen and build skills, and keep up with process control advances and industry best practices
- Experience with Taproot, WHY TREE, or other Root Cause Failure analysis tools
- Experience with Machine Learning/AI methodologies and application implementation
- Experience with Real Time Optimization applications and implementation
- Experience with Alarm Management and Control Performance Monitoring
- Professional certification
- Strong commitment to safe work practices
Compensation Range:
- $124,200 - $151,800 annual base salary

The Borger Refinery is located in Borger, Texas, in the Texas Panhandle, approximately 50 miles north of Amarillo, Texas. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. The refinery processes primarily medium sour crude oil produced locally, and heavy sour crude oil produced in Canada, all of which are delivered by pipeline. Borger produces a high percentage of transportation fuels, as well as petroleum coke, NGLs and solvents. Refined products are distributed to customers via pipelines from the refinery to West Texas, New Mexico, Colorado and the Midcontinent region.
