  • Own the refinery’s control system strategy and lifecycle, including distributed control systems (DCS), PLC interfaces, advanced process control (APC), and other stand‑alone controls, to meet safety, regulatory, production, and optimization objectives.
  • Design, standardize, and continuously improve APC and process control solutions, including development and testing of APC applications, inferred properties, control strategies, and alarm management to drive process safety, operability, and profitability.
  • Oversee engineering standards, compliance, and cybersecurity for control systems, including networks, domains, system software upgrades, hardware migrations, documentation, and alignment with corporate standards, process safety management, and security requirements.
  • Lead a portfolio of automation and control projects from concept through commissioning and startup, managing scope, schedule, and budget while partnering with operations, maintenance, process and project engineering, vendors, contractors, and corporate experts.
  • Champion refinery safety and operational excellence by actively supporting the safety program, providing guidance during startups, shutdowns, and upsets, and participating in incident investigations and Management of Change reviews.
  • Break down barriers and build cohesive, cross‑functional relationships across the refinery and enterprise, managing stakeholder expectations and facilitating effective collaboration to solve complex issues and implement change.
  • Use data and strategic analysis to drive quality decisions, including reporting and optimization of control system performance metrics and contributing to longer‑term automation and APC roadmaps and budget planning.

The Billings Refinery is located in Billings, Montana. Its facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. The refinery processes a mixture of Canadian heavy, high-sulfur crude oil delivered by pipeline, and domestic crude oil delivered by truck. With the startup of a new vacuum distillation unit in 2017, the refinery has 100 percent heavy crude processing capability. The refinery produces a high percentage of transportation fuels and petroleum coke. Finished petroleum products are distributed by pipeline, rail car and truck.
