As a Sr Engineer I, Instrument & Analyzer, you will be at the forefront of technology, working hands-on with advanced analyzer and instrumentation systems that help ensure our refineries runs smoothly and efficiently. You’ll collaborate with talented professionals, tackle real-world engineering challenges, and make a direct impact on the reliability and performance of our operations.
What You’ll Do
- Design and implement engineering solutions that ensure analyzer, instrumentation, and control systems operate safely, reliably, and in compliance with standards.
- Lead technical troubleshooting for complex analyzer and instrumentation issues to improve reliability and support daily operations.
- Collaborate with maintenance, operations, and project teams to guide repairs, validate installations, refine processes, and develop test procedures.
- Analyze equipment and performance data to identify trends, recommend improvements, and support root‑cause investigations.
- Develop and maintain engineering drawings, specifications, and documentation while supporting small to midsize projects.
- Drive reliability initiatives by addressing obsolescence, evaluating new technologies, and leading pilot programs.
- Provide training, share technical expertise, and participate in cross‑site or network discussions to support best practices and continuous improvement.

- Operate company vehicle on site premises and/or public roads up to 10%
- Work extended hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays, and perform occasional duties.
- Transport articles up to 50 pounds
- Climb ladders and stairs up to 200 feet
- Work safely near large, hot, high-speed machines, around chemicals and hydrocarbons under high pressure and heat, and in harsh weather conditions
- Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment
- Maintain face daily for proper respirator/face mask seal (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering
- 3 or more years of engineering experience directly related to instrumentation or analyzer systems
What Makes You Stand Out – Preferred
- Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
- 5 or more years of experience in the oil and gas or chemicals industry with emphasis on analyzers and/or instrumentation
- Experience working with Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC) units
- Experience with CEMS and SCAQMD / EPA Regulations and Requirements
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
Compensation Range This position has a base salary range of 137,700 - $168,300.

The Billings Refinery is located in Billings, Montana. Its facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. The refinery processes a mixture of Canadian heavy, high-sulfur crude oil delivered by pipeline, and domestic crude oil delivered by truck. With the startup of a new vacuum distillation unit in 2017, the refinery has 100 percent heavy crude processing capability. The refinery produces a high percentage of transportation fuels and petroleum coke. Finished petroleum products are distributed by pipeline, rail car and truck. Pipelines transport most of the refined products to markets in Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, Colorado and Washington.
