The Chemist Co-Op/Temp in the Billings Refinery Laboratory is a Temporary position for students pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in a hard science field (major or minor in Chemistry is preferred but not required) or hard science graduates. Participants in this program may work up to two years. Typically, this position works 20 hours per week during the school year, and 40 hours per week during the summer. This provides participants with the flexibility to maintain a college class schedule while completing the program. 

 

What You’ll Do

  • Assist Chemists and Lab Supervisors in the day-to-day operation of the laboratory and ensure tasks are carried out in a timely and consistent manner
  • Ensure the calibration of all laboratory equipment
  • Assess product conformance to specifications
  • Perform specialized testing and conduct analysis primarily in the G.C. and DHA lab areas
  • Ensure fulfillment of customer technical requests (e.g., samples, data, testing procedures)
  • Assist with laboratory support for optimization and troubleshooting of process units
  • Perform required Quality System activities, including managing testing methods and procedures, designation of finished product status, and Corrective/Preventive Action System duties
  • Backfill for Laboratory Chemists when absences occur
  • Support refinery Optimization and Planning with regard to production insight
  • Assist with coordinating refinery test-run sample schedules and testing, including shipping and liaison duties with outside laboratories
  • Support refinery chemical cleaning programs
  • Participate in the Lab Chemist Network

 

What You’ll Bring - Required

  • Legally authorized to work in the United States
  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
  • Currently pursuing or previously graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in a hard science field
  • Willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to comply with the following:
    • Maintain your face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (clean shaven)
    • Commitment to 20 hour work week during school year
    • Commitment to 40 hour work week during summer months (during school breaks is preferred as well)
    • Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, ear, and eye protection)
    • Work around chemicals, including acids and bases
    • Work with petroleum products that are under high pressure and heat
    • Work overtime

 

What Makes You Stand Out - Preferred

  • Strong technical/science competency as demonstrated through cumulative and major GPAs of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale

 

Compensation

This position has a base hourly pay of $26.50. This position is not eligible for VCIP/annual bonus, paid vacation, Short Term Disability, nor Medical insurance. This position is eligible for 8% 401k match.

 

The Billings Refinery is located in Billings, Montana. Its facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. The refinery processes a mixture of Canadian heavy, high-sulfur crude oil delivered by pipeline, and domestic crude oil delivered by truck. With the startup of a new vacuum distillation unit in 2017, the refinery has 100 percent heavy crude processing capability. The refinery produces a high percentage of transportation fuels and petroleum coke. Finished petroleum products are distributed by pipeline, rail car and truck. Pipelines transport most of the refined products to markets in Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, Colorado and Washington.
