The Pilot Plant Technician operates, troubleshoots, samples, maintains, and modify the various pilot plant units and equipment at the PRC Process Development Center. Pilot plants are small scale process units that are used to explore the scale up of lab processes prior to going commercial. They primarily operate with hydrocarbon- based feed stocks at pressures up to 2500 psi and temperatures up to 1000 degrees Fahrenheit. Part of the responsibilities of the job also includes interacting with process engineers for experimental test conditions and following instructions and procedures. In order to ensure a safe operation, these units follow Process Safety Management guidelines in addition to all PRC safety policies. Operations may consist of working rotating 12-hour day and night shifts including weekends and some holidays.
Relevant Equivalent Experience considered for this position may be drawn from: operations in the oil, gas and chemical industries, fields requiring a high degree of mechanical aptitude, operation or maintenance of pumps, compressors or other rotating equipment, CNC machine work, automotive technician and pipe fitting.
Key Responsibilities:
- Contribute to an environment where safety is a top priority.
- Work both independently and collaboratively to accomplish objectives.
- Build, operate, and maintain laboratory and pilot scale equipment.
- Work with various chemicals and hydrocarbons.
- Utilize Control Systems (DCS) for data evaluation, identify trends and correct process conditions.
- Document experimental results in an Electronic Laboratory Notebook.
- Follow standard operating procedures and policies.
- Mechanically assemble/disassemble various types of equipment.
- Work shift work on a rotating basis (including 12-hour nights, weekends and holidays).
Required Qualifications:
- Legally authorized to work in the job posting country.
- High School Diploma or GED/equivalent.
- Valid driver's license.
- Basic math and computer skills (Microsoft Excel and Word).
- Mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity.
- Ability to adjust quickly to unexpected conditions.
- Ability to manage a very diverse set of assignments.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills including detailed documentation.
- Willingness and ability (with or without a reasonable accommodation) to perform/comply with following:
- To ascend and descend five (5) flights of stairs
- To climb ladders/stairs and work at elevated heights
- To lift a stationary weight of 50-lbs. from a floor to a bench level
- To work standing for a two (2) hour period
- To respond to sound and system fault light alarms
- To manipulate high-pressure gas cylinders, use a cylinder cart, and attach a regulator to the cylinder using a wrench
- To use a drum dolly or cart to manipulate drum-sized containers
- To work outside in a variety of weather conditions
- To work with small and large quantities of various chemicals and hydrocarbons
- To comply with the respiratory program (i.e. clean shaven)
- To work shift work on a rotating basis (including 12-hour nights, weekends and holidays)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate degree in a science related field, technical degree, or equivalent work experience.
- One or more years of relevant laboratory experience (professional or college)
- Keen attention to detail with strong organizational and multitasking skills.
- Proficiency in handling of various lab equipment (e.g. Swagelok fittings, lab glassware).
- Experience with catalyst preparation and reactor operations.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting P&ID diagrams.
- Ability to operate and hold forklift certification.
