The Director, Carbon & Coking will lead a team of researchers overseeing lab scale experimental design and execution in the carbon materials development space. Research and business support focus areas include continuous improvement efforts in existing applications for electric arc furnace electrode and battery anode materials manufacturing, as well as exploring new product applications. This position connects closely with internal business units and operating sites to identify and troubleshoot process upsets, optimization opportunities, new material needs, plan & conduct trials, and investigating performance-determining characteristics of newly developed products.
Responsibilities May Include:
- Leading and developing a team of researchers as they build & oversee the execution of experimental plans.
- Fostering a scientifically-curious, customer-problem-solving centered culture.
- Engaging with business unit contacts to synthesize business opportunities/problems into research directions.
- Translating research results into practical solutions and recommendations for business units.
- Managing a portfolio of research programs, overseeing technical product development, milestone driven workplans, and budget.
- Providing technical guidance to projects across the portfolio as a carbon & coking technical expert.
- Working with team members to identify targets and develop detailed experimental protocols to assess materials & meet performance goals.
- Communicating results to a range of technical and business audiences from technician to executive levels.
- Presenting data in written and oral format to internal and external stakeholders.
Required Qualifications:
- Doctorate degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field
- 3 or more years of supervisory experience
- 1 or more years of experience in battery or other specialty carbon product R&D or manufacturing
- Ability to apply research and statistical analysis techniques to make sound, data-driven conclusions with a focus on framing experiments to solve business challenges
Preferred Qualifications:
- 5 or more years of supervisory experience
- Background in electrochemistry
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- 3 or more years of experience in battery or other specialty carbon product R&D or manufacturing
- Track record moving improvements and new products to market.
