What to Expect
The Specialist I, Sr Health & Safety is responsible for progressing specific initiatives in the area of safety and health, including new programs, revised programs, emergency response and safety infrastructure, contractor safety, and refinery capital projects.
What You’ll Do
- Champion a strong safety culture through visible leadership, motivation, and participation in emergency response and safety committees.
- Monitor, deliver, and review performance against health, safety, and environment (HSE) key performance indicators (KPIs) and patterns of behavior within the area of responsibility. Take action to improve performance and to resolve noncompliance with the organization's HSE policies, procedures, and mandatory instructions.
- Help design and implement a compliance program, liaising with the regulator to ensure the program adheres to regulatory and compliance standards. This may also involve supervising the activities of a regulatory/compliance team.
- Communicate effectively across teams and levels, providing HSE guidance and ensuring understanding of safety requirements among employees and contractors
- Conduct field assessments, hazard identification, job planning, and compliance checks.
- Support RAMs, MOC, PSSR, and PHA processes.
- Lead audits, analyze findings, and implement corrective actions to ensure regulatory and internal compliance.
- Investigate incidents, track corrective actions, and analyze HSE data to drive improvements and reporting.
- Perform environmental and industrial hygiene monitoring to ensure a safe workplace and support permitting activities.
What You’ll Bring – Required
- Legally authorized to work in the job posting country.
- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent level
- 3 or more years of occupational health and safety experience
- Willing and able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC)
- Must be willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to comply with the following:
- Travel up to 5%
- Operate company vehicle on site premises and/or public roads up to 20%
- Work extended hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays, and perform occasional on-call (24/7) duties.
- Transport articles up to 50 pounds
- Climb ladders and stairs up to 200 feet
- Work safely near large, hot, high-speed machines, around chemicals and hydrocarbons under high pressure and heat, and in harsh weather conditions
- Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment
- Maintain face daily for proper respirator/face mask seal (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)
What Makes You Stand Out – Preferred
- 5 or more years of occupational health and safety experience in the Energy industry
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), or Occupation Health and Safety Technician (OHST) certification
- Knowledge of:
- Refinery operations and process units
- SAP
- PSM
- API, NFPA, DOSH/OSHA, and DOE oil spill requirements
- Establishes and follows through on meaningful objectives, with the ability to self-organize
- Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office
- Works at an advanced level to determine and analyze trends from data that is collected to assist in compiling reports that will help in decision-making.
- Works at an advanced level to express ideas, request actions, formulate plans, & policies by means of clear and effective verbal communications.
- Works at an advanced level to automate compliance tasks, maintain regulatory compliance, and generate reports for auditing purposes.
- Ability to effectively interact with all levels within an organization
Compensation Range
This position has a base salary range of $140,400 - $171,600.

The Lake Charles Refinery is located in Westlake, Louisiana. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrocracking, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. Facilities also include a specialty coker and calciner. The refinery processes a mixture of light to heavy, low- and high sulfur and low- and high-acid crude oils. It receives domestic, Canadian and other foreign crude oil through truck, pipeline, marine transportation and terminals, including the Beaumont and Clifton Ridge terminals and the Bayou Bridge Pipeline. Lake Charles produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include off-road diesel, home heating oil, feedstock for our Excel Paralubes joint venture, specialty graphite petroleum coke and petroleum coke. Refined products are distributed in the southeastern and eastern United States by truck, rail car, barge or pipelines and exported to Latin America and West Africa.
