The Trading Team Lead, NGL – North America (Director) is the trading team lead for North America NGL trading within the Phillips 66 Commercial organization. Building upon existing physical assets, customer relationships, and commercial flows, this role is accountable for setting strategy and leading value generation through physical and financial trading, origination, portfolio optimization, and commercial integration activities. This role reports directly to the Global Trading Lead, NGL.
As a member of the Global NGL Trading leadership team, this position serves as the commercial and organizational leader for the North America NGL trading desk. The role is responsible for setting direction for North America NGL trading activity. This includes maximizing value for Phillips’ refinery and Midstream assets, and supervising and developing a team of traders across Houston and Calgary. Additionally, the role supervises and has earnings responsibility for Phillips’ butane blending business and propane marketing. Ensures the desk is positioned to meet profit, growth, portfolio, and risk management objectives. This leader will work closely with the Team Lead, Global LPG to align North America NGL trading strategy with broader global LPG and NGL priorities and will represent the NGL trading organization across Phillips 66.
This role requires deep market expertise, strong commercial judgment, organizational leadership, and the ability to lead through influence in highly complex and competitive markets. The successful candidate will combine strategic perspective, disciplined risk management, talent leadership, and a proven ability to create value across changing market conditions while building a high-performing desk culture focused on accountability, collaboration, and commercial excellence.
What You’ll Do
- Lead the North America NGL trading desk to achieve annual profit objectives while maintaining alignment with company risk, governance, and performance expectations.
- North America NGL team is responsible for all Phillips 66 refineries’ supply and offtake of NGL, including responsible for keeping high utilization of downstream conversion units.
- Collaborate closely with Midstream teams to maximize value across the full Midstream asset base, including fractionators, storage caverns, pipelines, and terminals.
- Develop and set the strategic direction for North America NGL physical and financial trading activities to support profitability, growth, portfolio optimization, and integration with the broader global LPG business.
- Own the overall performance of the desk, including commercial results, portfolio positioning, risk alignment, decision quality, and execution standards.
- Supervise, coach, and develop traders located in Houston and Calgary, providing clear direction, regular feedback, performance management, and day-to-day leadership to support strong commercial execution and professional growth.
- Strategy and profit responsibility for Phillips’ butane blending and propane marketing businesses.
- Build, retain, and attract high-performing trading talent by leading staffing plans, succession planning, promotions, recruiting, and organizational capability development as business needs evolve.
- Establish desk priorities and role clarity across the team, and ensure resources are aligned with business needs and commercial opportunities.
- Actively trade one or more physical and financial books.
- Work closely with the Trading Lead, Global LPG to align commercial priorities, portfolio strategy, customer and supply development, and market views across related businesses and regions, and includes providing local support for Global LPG team personnel.
- Lead all North America NGL growth initiatives, including development of new commercial opportunities, origination activity, customer relationships, and market positioning that expand Phillips 66 participation and profitability.
- Guide traders and marketers on daily commercial tactics and portfolio decisions, ensuring trading activity is grounded in sound economics, aligned with strategic priorities, and informed by evolving market conditions.
- Lead the desk in aligning market views, managing exposures, challenging assumptions, and making disciplined portfolio decisions.
- Lead the desk’s approach to market intelligence, scenario analysis, and commercial planning.
- Providing senior support or back-up coverage across trading books when required, while maintaining primary accountability for leadership of the desk.
- Collaborate with trading leads in other commodities, regions, and offices to share market intelligence, align strategy, and identify cross-commodity or cross-regional value opportunities.
- Ensure the trading organization complies with all governance and internal control requirements related to risk management, legal, compliance, credit, delegations of authority, and corporate policies.
- Maintain strong internal relationships as a senior commercial point of contact for NGL trading across Commercial, Midstream, CFR, Risk, Finance, Operations and other key value-chain partners to ensure appropriate support, issue resolution, and alignment on business priorities.
- Cultivate and manage key external relationships at a senior level to expand market presence, strengthen commercial access, and increase trading potential.
- Communicate strategy, performance, market developments, and risk perspectives clearly to senior stakeholders and leadership teams.
- Mentor talent and reinforce high standards for integrity, risk discipline, and commercial performance across the desk.
What You’ll Bring – Required
- Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
- Bachelor’s degree or higher
- 15 or more years of energy supply, trading, origination, or commercial experience
- Deep understanding of NGL markets, commercial drivers, and the latest North America and global market developments
- Demonstrated leadership experience overseeing commercial teams and managing performance in a fast-paced trading environment
- Proven ability to lead through others while maintaining accountability for desk-level performance, portfolio alignment, and talent outcomes

Compensation Range
This position has a base salary range of $244,800 – $299,200. This role is eligible to participate in the company’s commercial bonus program, offering the opportunity to earn additional compensation based on business and individual performance, in accordance with program guidelines.

The Commercial organization works to effectively leverage assets and market knowledge to create additional value within the risk parameters of the Company. We do this by maximizing general interest profitability, enhancing return on capital employed by successfully partnering with the Refining, Transportation and Marketing functions to ensure Value Chain Integration. Our truck and rail fleets support our feedstock and distribution operations. Rail movements are provided via a fleet of more than 10,000 owned and leased rail cars. Truck movements are provided through numerous third-party trucking companies, as well as through our 100 percent-owned subsidiary, Sentinel Transportation LLC.
