Phillips 66 is seeking applicants for a Research Engineer position in the Digital Products group at its Energy Research & Innovation (ERI) organization in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. ERI employees from multiple business disciplines deliver critical support and solutions that enable strong operating excellence and growth opportunities for the company worldwide. A successful applicant has a customer-first mindset, learns quickly, and works collaboratively ion projects. Projects vary widely in scope, ranging from unit optimization to developing novel machine learning models based upon laboratory or process data using chemical engineering domain expertise with first principles and data-driven modeling techniques. 

 

Responsibilities May Include:

  • Use domain knowledge and advanced statistical and machine learning methods to solve science and engineering problems.
  • Balance pr­­iorities between multiple applied research projects and propose new research directions.
  • Work closely with engineers, scientists, and both lab and pilot plant technicians to collect data.
  • Analyze experimental, pilot plant, and commercial data to develop subject-specific models.
  • Develop applicable models and tools for data analysis and visualization.
  • Write code to support model deployment.
  • Ability to manage tasks according to established schedules and timely completion of deliverables
  • Learn, support, and update existing models deployed in production environments.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to identify the value proposition.
  • Communicate results through reports and presentations.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Chemical Engineering or closely related engineering or science discipline
  • Intermediate proficiency in analyzing and interpreting data generated from chemical and physical processes
  • Intermediate proficiency with applied statistical and machine learning approaches for data analysis
  • Intermediate proficiency in programming using statistical and engineering languages (e.g., Python, R, Julia)

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3 or more years of experience developing models for end-customer utilization
  • 3 or more years of experience in the energy industry or other similar experience
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with experience in working in collaborative team environments.
  • Ability to manage work to a schedule with timelines and deliverables
  • Experience with data engineering including database design and building data pipelines
  • Experience using git collaboratively (e.g., GitHub), DevOps/MLOps, and Docker (i.e., automated unit testing, app/model deployment pipelines) 
  • Frontend web development (e.g., JavaScript, React, Svelte, R Shiny, etc.)
