Instrument Technician Apprentice - Ponca City Refinery

The Instrument Technician Apprentice, Ponca City Refinery maintains the refinery's control, monitoring and safety instrumentation systems. A high degree of responsibility, initiative and technical competence are required to support the instrument systems needed to operate a complex refinery. Proactive safety consciousness for yourself and co-workers is mandatory.

Responsibilities May Include:

  • Repair, troubleshoot, and maintain Refinery electronic and pneumatic instrumentation, including controllers, control valves, transmitters, analyzers, and vibration equipment. Also includes the maintenance and configuration of Distributive Control Systems and the maintenance and programming of Programmable Logic Controllers
  • Perform preventative and predictive maintenance for instrument equipment
  • Provide inspection, testing, and documentation of safety systems to meet OSHA regulations
  • Assist with pre-startup safety reviews and new project technical reviews
  • Communicate well with all organizational levels and present information / ideas in an articulate and organized way
  • Expected to work effectively in a team environment
  • Work schedule is normally days, Monday through Friday. Will involve some nights, weekends, call-outs, and overtime work to support the 24-hour operation of the Refinery
  • Occasional travel time may be required, estimated at one to two weeks per year.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
  • At least 18 years of age
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Valid driver's license
  • Willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to perform/comply with the following: 
    • To climb up to 250 feet in height
    • To lift up to 50 pounds
    • To work overtime, including nights, weekends, and call-outs
    • To work outside in harsh weather conditions
    • To work in enclosed spaces, such as tanks and silos
    • To work near large, hot, high-speed machines
    • To work around chemicals, including acids and bases
    • To work with petroleum products that are under high pressure and heat
    • To wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, ear and eye protection)
    • To maintain your face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)
    • To read technical procedures and materials in English

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree or higher in Instrumentation or Electronics
  • Hold or willing to obtain FCC license
  • 2 or more years of direct instrument maintenance experience working in a refinery, chemical plant, or power plant and/or other relevant industry
  • Basic proficiency level with Microsoft Office, and SAP applications
  • Experience with configuration and maintenance using Honeywell TDC3000 or other Distributive Control Systems
  • Experience with Allen Bradley Programmable Logic Controllers and Rockwell software packages
  • Be able to read, understand and work from Piping & Instrument Diagrams, Loop Diagrams, Wiring Diagrams and Ladder or Logic Diagrams


*The tentative start date for this position is June 2025. Relocation assistance is not available for this position. 
**The starting hourly contract rate is $39.15. Future pay increases will be based on the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

 

The Ponca City Refinery is located in Ponca City, Oklahoma, approximately 95 miles northwest of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Its facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. The refinery processes a mixture of light, medium and heavy crude oil delivered via pipeline from Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, the U.S. Rockies and Canada. Infrastructure improvements have enabled the delivery of locally produced crude oil by pipeline and truck. The refinery produces a high percentage of transportation fuels and anode-grade petroleum coke. Refined products are primarily distributed to customers by company-owned and common carrier pipelines to markets throughout the Midcontinent region.
